I totally diasgree. I think a lot of Producers are "trained"... Either profesionally or by the actual developers of thd software. If I was Armin, I would have 2 guys from Ableton visit me and "show me how everything worked" (from his Blog). Unfortunately, the Germans aint showing up at my place anytime soon.
ProTools offers courses all over the place on a wide range of topics - from harware to filters... The tech is now so complicated it needs to be explained.
Tutorials are only as good as the content, and you can't ask questions, get somebody who knows the tool to listen and give immediate feedback, etc.
I'm assuming you don't know of any courses then... thanks for taking part.
Dan, why did you do this to me? So help me God, if this turns into a "Why do people smoke in the Guv conversation", I will kill you. |

OK. Listen carefully. Can you hear it?
The sound you hear is me pounding my head against the wall.
The other sound you hear is me polishing my STANTON turntable cartridge so i can stick it quite far into Beanieboy's ear. Then, maybe I can read up online or take a tutorial to figure out how to remove it. (Of course, I would hope the doctor hadn't actually taken a course on how to remove it. That would be cheating. And much less fulfilling, according to Beanieboy)
Why was such a simple question such a Tranceaddict stereotype.
I thank you all for your help.
I'm going to kill myself now.

Phone the music stores like Steves, Long& Mc'Quade and Definately Saved By Technology they sometimes have workshops that are free, but they can definately point you in the right direction.
Also there are Tuturial DVDS and free stuff all over the net.
But can I ask why you are using Ableton? If you check there site they have lot of tutorials and Vid's
Good luck!!! |

Chrismack thinks that "if only I were Armin, everything would just come to me magically."
Fool around with it for gawd's sake....
You will know it better in the end.
-I have STANTON cartridges in my TECHNICS MK5s....
-I *love* smoking at Guv
-I love TAs. :-)
-I think school is a cop-out for the weak willed. |

I'm not - but I see your point.
I don't know how good it is, but Berkleemusic.com has an online Ableton Live course. Berklee College is what Digidesign recommends to people for ProTools training, so I'd imagine that the course is at least decent... of course, it might be a little out of the average person's price range. Sorry that I can't provide much more information here but it's a starting point at least!
I don't think you're going to have much luck if you're looking for a tiny local seminar... they just don't have those things in Toronto, you have to go to California. :p |

I have actually looked at the Berklee Music course you mention. I'm considering it...
I've also talked to Frances at Moog and what'shisface at L&M. Both say they get asked a couple times a week. Seems like it would be a good business for somebody to bring in an Ableton geek a couple times a year to give a course. There is also the option of going to some conference like EMT and take their 2 day "primer" but my experience is that those coursea are such one-offs that they tend to suck. |

Err... on that you are right. If i were Armin my life would be pretty great. Magical even. Sorry.. need to fantasize a bit here...
If that was the case, even playing with myself would take on a whole new dimension - the Ableton stuff, I'd no longer have time for anything else.
Chris
PS. You are still getting a punch next time I see you. |

Well, that is the thing about the seminars and mini-courses, and probably part of the reason why there aren't that many of them. Production is such a huge and open-ended field, it's nearly impossible to cover any useful amount of material in a matter of hours. Especially since those seminars tend to attract a lot of people who know absolutely *nothing* about it - or worse, computer-illiterates who have no concept of files and folders and can't figure out where the file they saved 3 seconds ago just went.
So you're right, an Ableton Live seminar *would* probably make a pile here, but those things are extremely difficult to run and usually suck. If you're into experimentation then I think you are best off with a "legitimate" course... but that's just my opinion. |
