For those who play piano...
View this Thread in Original format

how long would it take for a beginner to learn to play Coldplay's "Clocks?"

So I've always wanted to take piano lessons and FINALLY took the plunge. First lesson is Thursday! ($8/ per half hour)

The only background I have is my ability to read music. So far, lessons would be once a week but of course I intend to practice.

I am wanting to bring in a modern pop piece as a goal. With all these factors in mind, is "Clocks" too advanced, unattainable?

Here is the tab:

Song: "Clocks"
Band: Coldplay
Album: "Rush of Blood To The Head"
Year: 2002

Tabbed by: ux²
E-mail: uxsquared@hotmail.com

For this tab, Middle C marks the beginning of Octave 1.

C Db D Eb E F Gb G Ab A Bb B C Db D Eb E F Gb G Ab A Bb B C
|<======== Octave 1 ========>|<======== Octave 2 ========>|

Each note below has a number after it. This number (either 1
or 2) identifies the octave in which the note is played.

"Clocks" has eight 'eighth notes' in each measure.
One measure of music is represented by one line of notes.
Play each note one at a time, right after the other.

Section 1 is played in both the left and right hands at the same
time. Each hand plays exactly the same notes, except the left hand
plays one octave lower than the right hand. The right hand part
has been tabbed out, so once you learn the riff, you can apply it
to the left hand. Note that this applies only to Section 1.

Section 1:

Eb2 Bb1 G1 Eb2 Bb1 G1 Eb2 Bb1

Db2 Ab1 F1 Db2 Ab1 F1 Db2 Ab1

Db2 Ab1 F1 Db2 Ab1 F1 Db2 Ab1

C2 Ab1 F1 C2 Ab1 F1 C2 Ab1

Section 2:

Ab2 G2 Eb2 Ab2 G2 Eb2 Ab2 G2

Ab2 G2 Db2 Ab2 G2 Db2 Ab2 G2

Ab2 G2 Db2 Ab2 G2 Db2 Ab2 G2

Ab2 G2 C2 Ab2 G2 C2 Ab2 G2

Section 3:

Each measure in the bridge contains one 'eighth note' played
eight times. For brevity's sake, it's been compressed so
all you have to do is "play each note below eight times".

F2 F2 F2 F2

F2 F2 Ab1 C2

F2 F2 Ab1 C2

F2 F2 F2 F2

This song is broken down into ten parts, listed below.
The numbers below refer to the measures of each part.

1-16 Intro Play Section 1 four times
17-32 Verse 1 No piano
33-48 Chorus 1 Play Section 1 four times
49-64 Verse 2 No piano
65-80 Chorus 1 Play Section 1 four times
81-96 Chorus 2 Play Section 2 four times
97-112 Bridge Play Section 3 one time
113-120 Chorus 1 Play Section 1 two times
121-152 Chorus 2 Play Section 2 eight times
153-168 Outro Play Section 2 four times

Tabber's Notes:
This song reminds me of Radiohead playing "Like Spinning Plates"
at a concert in Ohio. An excellent tab of that song can be
downloaded at http://www.pianotabs.net/tabs/r/rad_like.txt .
It's more complicated than this tab, but it's worth it.

about 6 for me, but i was sober
but yeah, it could be tough for a beginner if you play it in the correct key
i'd start with yellow or something slower if i were you, and work your way up to clocks
good luck though!

i've always wanted to play piano too hehehe :p. but i always wanted to rock some tori amos songs hahah.

you know...to be honest...i think you could play the coldplay song without lessons. if you had the music...and took your time learning the keys i think you could do it. but yeah it'd still be cool to learn to play...

Yeha its not very complex after your muscle memory kicks in.. essentially its all just notes.. not a lot of super complex chord progressions etc etc

hahaa well .. I was told a year. She says she'll instruct by a book. Of course that has its advantages as to theory and notation but I hope its not ALL based by book. I hope she'll just let me bring things in and we just jump in.

Don't ever give me the idea of drinking and doing something else simultaneously! Not that it hasn't already crossed my mind :stongue:

I forgot the structure in "Yellow" I'll have to listen to it again. Thanks, Mez.

Tori Amos .. "Winter!"

Take them with me, Jason. You would get flocks of chicks and could be my motivation! I think there's about 1 month left on that tune, by the way. I'm counting the days til ITS MINE.

maybe i'll do a search on amazon today for some tori amos sheet music hehehe :p

if i can find it, which i'm sure it's out there somewhere, maybe i'll give them a go on my keyboard hehehe :p

"my immortal" > "clocks"

"my immortal" makes me cry like a whimpering baby .. :( ..

but yeah yeah .. my immortal is an easy song .. it's like 6 keys repeated over and over again ..

but i agree with the above .. since you're a beginner .. start with the older coldplay songs .. the slower ones .. of course like 'yellow' or maybe 'trouble' ..
