if you are considering using the patches/gum/inhaler, have a chat to your gp (hoping that he/she has any common sense) and plan it out. like with business, "people dont plan to fail, they fail to plan"
combination therapy (i.e. wearing patch, and then chewing gum when the urge is too great) is a good way to step down from addiction, but it has to be a serious attempt. even though they say you get over the withdrawl in the first few days, the nicotine receptors in your brain are still active for up to 8 weeks (im pretty sure) so thats why they recommend the program last for 8 weeks. also, from speaking to drug reps on the matter, they also recommend that even if your a 10 a day smoker, start on the strongest patch/gum and stay on it for the same length of time a heavy smoker does
all the NRT's only release about a third of what you get from a normal cigarette and are released much slower (20 minutes compared to 7 seconds) so therefore removing the "reward" you get from sucking down a fag.
the reason why i am arking on about this is that youve got a better chance of quitting if you use the NRT's properly and possibly overcome thoughts about failure last time round you tried to quit

i guess for anyoen who actually respects my opinion, then they could see that i could tell them it isnt that hard and for people like Jules who have said they wish to quit and who i think have got a bit of a brain in 'em to read a 200 page book, then they could use this to their advantage.

this book has a chapter on all the possible things you could ask about quitting smoking.. it addresses them all. admitedly he does repeat himself, but this is part of the solution. to get the message through

i would not advise nicotene replacement therapy.. because think about it.. its still fueling your body with what you're addicted to, but just in another form.. whatst he point of that!!!

i've quit smoking during the week and have basically become a social smoker.

ok ive asked this question to myself a few times and it comes down to the behavioural aspect of smoking. as i mentioned, you can get over the physiological addiction to nicotine in a relatively short period, but it is the behaviours that are associated with reaching for a cigarette which are the hardest to overcome. because nicotine is a potent anti-depressant, when your feeling stressed, you have developed a reflex (for lack of a better term) to go for that smoke. because the action is associated with short term relief, the reflex becomes a very strong one.
even though your still introducing the drug into your body, it is at lower levels than that of what you would get from an actual cigarette, the reward is removed. as with any creature, we seek rewards (hence why some people find masturbating 10 times a day to not be a problem:haha: ) and the most effective way to stop a behaviour is to remove those rewards

all those points are very correct and the book addresses them.

the end result is that you produce someone who has read the book who has a changed mindset and they realise they dont need to fallback no cigarettes as a social crutch or at times of stress :)

just outta curiosity how many smokes do you guys smoke per week?

for me its like 1-2 every weekday, and a "few more" on weekends.

i was smoking roughly about 10-12 cigarettes aday, and then more on weekends....


trust me, it is a great day when you can look at a smoker and pity them for smoking instead of being a smoker and wondering why non-smokers dont know what they're missing out on

its all an illusiono!

20-25 a day, more on weekends, maybe 40 or so if im at an event or a night on the piss :( (begic if you were allowed to take smoke breaks at work like me, i bet youd be smoking more! ;) )
