Windows Media Player problem

I've recently started having an issue with Windows Media Player, basically, it won't play .mpg files from Internet Explorer. If I click on an mpg file while browsing, it will open media player, which will hang for a while, then show the first frame of the video, then just play the sound. Other formats of video (ie wmv) will stream fine.
If I download the video (save target as) it will then play fine, but I'd rather not have to save videos if I'm just watching them the once.
It's only just started happening, it's been working fine up until the beginning of the week.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance! |

It's not good to left click on mpeg files as it opens straight into WMP, It wont play cause its in the middle of downloading, It's recomended to just right click and Save As. |

That's not what the problem is, because it's always worked previously, and plus, the sound plays, so the video is already downloaded.
I know it's better to save the video, but these are short clips from a video editing forum, and I don't want to save them, like I said, I just want to view them once. |

Maybe the file is too big, Like I said, I recomend you save as instead, I never left click on mpeg files, I want to download them to the harddrive to play, Left clicking on the file will make WMP think its a streaming file, When it's not, Which is why it doesn't play for you. |

read what the guy said
Check your version is upto date & that you have any other necessary plugins, or of course, you can play them on winamp i think if you set that to default player & see if that works |

i've had a similar problem which i think was solved by upgrading codecs, not 100% sure tho :) |

| It's possible the mpeg you downloaded is not the regular MPEG1, But an MPEG2 file, If thats the case, You definately need a codec that can play MPEG2 files, What you need is the K-Lite Codec Pack, It comes with every single Codec you can think of, It lets you select which codec to install, Theres a couple of MPEG2 ones in there, So try which of the codec works best for you, You can download it right here. |

| I'll give it a try, but would a codec problem affect streaming from the web, or playing it locally, considering that when I left click an mpg from the web, it's not actually streaming is it? It goes to the temp folder and plays from there while it downloads doesn't it? |
