Starting a new label - questions

Hey people,
I would like to start my own label. Can you give me an idea what the basic first steps are and how much they will cost.
I already have a couple of people who would be good producers/remixers.
As I understand the process is:
- Pay them to write/remix certain track(s)
- Press about 20 promotional records with the track(s) [by the way, who does this? how much $?]
- Send these promo records to several DJs and catalogs like Juno
- Wait for feedback, then judge if this experiment was a success
Any details or comments? |

yeah for sure, id say all costs included promotion especially..
Pressing
Promotion (web page, sending tunes, etc)
Tunes (paying hte guys for the tunes/remixes)
could be from 5- 10 large easy. |

costs off the top of my head:
mastering
pressing
copyrights
licensing
promotion
distribution
royalties
those are your basics i think...not to discourage you of course, but start up is a challenge... |

some of those might not be there..
Mastering: may already be done by producer
Distribution = promotion
Royalties: a lot of artists just get a lump sum, *from what ive heard |

My producers are beginners and they'd be happy to get published anywhere, even for a $50-100.
(That's not to say they're "amateurs," their skills are professional.)
My main expense will be pressing/promotion. How much does it cost to press a single vinyl and send it to Europe? |

about 500 dollars for the mold.
plastic is extran dunno exact figures.. 500 base cost i believe tho. |

i don't care how good people think they are at mastering their own tracks...very few will be able to do that themselves and have it be professional sounding.
and maybe distribution is apart of the promotional costs, but i listed it separately because promotion encompasses a lot of things...
maybe his young artists won't be getting royalties, but you'd have to pay your people somehow even if its a lump sum... |

true true and true.
Unless a young artist has a background in engineering or a LOT of practice or talent, chances are hell be mastering his tune in the studio. but if HardTranceProd is buying FINISHED tunes, then essentially they may already be mastered, if he wants to remaster.... |

I have 2 sets of mates each with their own label, one is just breaking even, the other is having a selection of issues.
I hope you didn't get into this because it's easy money, because it isn't. |

I'm getting into this because I love the music and want to make a difference in the scene.
Too many elitists and s are blocking the release of fresh new material that can reinvigorate the scene. And I'm ready to take advantage of their stupidity. |

| regardless of whether you do your own mastering or you pay a studio to do it, you'll still have to pay for the pressing plant to do mastering, and most probably, you won't even notice a difference in sound. |
