Re smoking restrictions - the percentage of people who smoke there is much, much higher than in Canada. Non smoker rights are virtually non existent because the non smoking population is so small. |
socialists are always the first ones to use the "tyranny of the majority" arguement yet are usually the first ones to invoke the "majority of non smokers" arguement when defending smoking laws.
double standards? you betcha |

i dont buy the argeument that our society is not ready for it.
Take the topless law. Toplessness is legal for women yet you dont even see it at the beach. The only people who took advantage of it at first were a few strippers advertising their
wares and the odd exhibitionist.
Yeah at first u might get a few people who cant handle their liquor. But i suspect that the most that would happen is that people would pace themselves longer throughout the night. And maybe the odd person might enjoy a cold one at the beach instead of being forced to pour it into a pop can (what i tend to do)... I am a firm believer that our binge drinking habits are a DIRECT result of last call. You dont see binge drinking nearly as much in societies without last call.
It's time to repeal our stupid laws.
and when i tell people they are appalled too. Many times people say "but i thought canada was a free country?"
yeah, so did i |
Free country does not mean anarchy and lawlessness. Do people think they can get away with anything when they move here?
Binge drinking is not the direct result of last call. that's ridiculous. People do not go out at 11pm thinking "I better ram all of these drinks back because in three hours I wont be able to get another one."
It's a cultural thing - and I don't think the government changing the legislation surrounding alcohol is going to change that (for the better, anyways).
Jay, why don't you just move out of Canada if you hate it so much? I can't remember the last time you had somehting positive to say about this country. |

Maybe not at 11 pm but I know many people that come back from the bar at last call with three drinks in their hands....that is a direct result that it is last call and if they want to get all the alcohol they want they better buy in bulk.
I agree that it is a cultural thing. If we started drinking at an earlier age then alcohol would not be this amazing thing you get to do when you turn 19. Personally, I think the drinking age should be 14. Teach kids how to be responsible at a younger age so that way when they are out celebrating their 19th birthday they are not going to be as likely to hop behind the wheel. That doesn't mean kids should be allowed into bars however allowing them to drink at restaurants or at home allows them time to get acustomn to it. |

good! thats how it should be. Enforce the crime of driving drunk. Dont treat everyone as if they are about to.
Id be all for zero blood alcohol while driving if it meant we could drop most of the stupid booze laws we have. |

They sure do!!! especially at 1-2 oclock. People routinely line them up one after one because last call is coming. And the only places ive ever seen this behaviour is canada, US and britain. The only places with last call.
Im convinced that last call encourages binge drinking.
and im not looking for anarchy. Most of the world has very very liberal (by our standards) drinking laws and they havnt gone to hell. |
