right now the idea of spending $2000+ on RENT and not getting a tax deduction is really killing me...

I know Vernon is joking... :eyespop:

Filthadelphia is a place I only needed to visit once. Commuting anywhere in my opinion licks!! Time is money, life is too short, why waste it on a subway or bus, etc?

A salary of 100K to live in the city? I don't make that much and I don't struggle in life and live in the city. But I share a 3 bedroom. But my buddy has a 1 bedroom in the east village for $1400. Nothing spectacular but pretty solid and an easy trek to any club. I just think it's too dirty down there and too noisy. $3000 to rent a place? What a way to waste money!! I don't care how much money I made I wouldn't do that. Get a place for $1700 and pocket the $1300 and spend it on something else like savings.

NYC is more expensive but I make a lot more money that balances it out. To have a car then it might really start adding up but I subract the car payment, gasoline, parking, etc. and my rent looks a lot cheaper. I miss driving sometimes but not that much. Paying $300-400 a month in parking would make me puke!

Personally I wouldn't live outside of Manhattan because I get pissed about taking 35 minutes to get home. Then I hear people at my work taking 1 1/2 hours just to get home. Oh my God I would shoot myself....

HA! Where downtown? In the loop? I've only been to crobar and soundbar I think? Of course it was a week day night, I also managed to get out to one of the casino's out there also. It's pretty weird visiting a city by yourself, although I do admit it is fun and exciting. But for someone my age in relation to my co-workers, none of them would accompany me to crobar LOLS so I did the solo-clubbing thing. Not bad at all although the scene there and the scene in NYC are two different things.

thats why they commute 1.5hrs cuz they are the ones making the 6 figures and end up making cheap payments on their mortage out in west bubble .

Only places in the city i would ever consider moving to would be::

Tribeca - Washington Street
Park Slope

Rest of the city has gone down hill in the past 10 years.

To rent for 2500 a month is so stupid (even 2000)...much rather tough it out for a year in a ty 900 studio for a year or so and put a down payment on a Condo in CT (Rowayaton, Stamford, Darien, Old Greenwich) or Westchester (mainly Rye) then sell in that in a few years for a house downpayment.

Then again i am older now....if you asked me when i was in my early to mid 20s i would rant and rave about living in NYC...but as you get older you see the city for what it is - a dirty smelly disgusting over-priced island.

Most of you will realize that as you get older....

I suggest saving as much money as you possbily can in your 20s...and i mean AS MUCH as you can and buying a house in your late 20s/early 30s.

another option.... you could, if you wanted to, get a place in greenwich or stamford CT and take the train to nyc. a lot of people in CT do that. rent might be slightly cheaper on the edge of CT compared to NYC but not too much... I've really considered doing that myself since all the better jobs for graphic design are in NYC it seems but, I don't know.

:)

IMHO Stamford / Norwalk / Greenwich, CT = biggest ripoff in America. Way overpriced rents and costs for just about everything, an overall tony atmosphere that tends to frown upon most things geared towards twentysomethings and traffic / commuting hell (if you like to drive) with I-95. And its still an hour to get INTO NYC. If you're thinking about going sububrbs, I recommend lower Westchester - in particularly White Plains, although I've heard parts of Yonkers and the neighboring towns are nice.

It is a rip off but it seems almost unavoidable these days. everything definitely is way overpriced...lol!!! "a Tony atmosphere"....haha! I'll agree with that Sebring! Tiesto14 (hey brooks!) is right, in genereal, it's better to save for a condo...which is what I've been trying to do for a while....although condos are pretty overpriced as well, but at least your money is going somewhere instead of out the door.

i definitely want a neighborhood that has great places to eat, some nightlife, but also does go to bed at sometime - i know that i wouldn't want to live downtown or mid-town.

Go to Queens...you can get a studio for like 700-800$ or a 1 br from like 900-1200$, that is if you dont mind the commute to the city everyday. Astoria is a 15-20 minute train ride to the city.

Apartments in the city are too expensive and a metro card is much cheaper.

There are deals you just have to hunt them down and find them before anyone else does. It isnt impossible though, I live in a 2br utils included + private parking space for 800$ in Flushing Queens (it actually just went up it used to be 700) but I had to get on a loooooooonnng waiting list for this place.
