he could be using them for stuff other than sitting at his computer and listening to trance music at the Db level equivilant of a jet engine taking off 3cm away from his ear and posting pictures of extremely fit, fine women on TA:p

Yeaaa this is prolly the millionth post about headphones, but whatever... :D

So my Sony MVR-D700DJs are broke (as in, the plastic is cracked and the leather is cracked, etc. but still sounds great).

I was looking for new headphones... researched Ultrasone stuff, Sennheiser ones, and some AKG's... Wasn't really thinking about price but comparing sound and dynamic range.

The Sony's dynamic range is 5 - 30,000Hz... Everything else I've seen so far (even $500 or $1000 headphones) does not have a closely comparable range to that. Everything is either 10 or 8 or 15 to 25,000 or 28,000...

Does anyone know any good (don't care about price <$500) headphones that have a wide of a range as the Sony's?!?! :conf:

Sony just lies about their specs to get the good numbers.
1) 5-30,000Hz at what -6dB, -9dB, -200dB:conf: it doesnt mean if they dont quantify what they define thier corner freq.

Yes I know the standard is -3dB but sony doesnt like standards take a look at their power amps for example, 300W peek power, himm odd the standard is to rate power output in RMS.

2) You cant hear much below 15Hz and much above 20kHz anyways.

got some sennheiser hd-25's today and i'm very happy. sound quality and bass is excellent, they're comfortable to wear (adjustable) and light. great phones.

i said Nothing to whip my out about. the whole ing point is that "u dont need headphones, u need big speakers" am i right?

headphones serve a purpose. big speakers serve a purpose.

i just think its dumb when u say like "Yeah, im sittin pretty on 900W... im ing cool" and im just like wtf?! 900 RMS is good, but not like "omg my room is a nightclub x10" good.

Watts don't even matter. Just because something goes loud doesnt mean that it sounds good. Also, watts are measured in a way that the difference between 500watts and 1000watts is only 2 or 3 db (as an example). I forgot what that's called exactly.

You can get a nice amp with 10watts total output power and still drive speakers pretty loud, while having really good quality audio.. compared to a system with 900watts power, which may not even compare in quality.

Don't brag about power, cause it really doesn't matter, unless you are going for max volume. Also some speakers start clipping below the amps's max output wattage, so you need speakers that support the watts in the first place.

i think you are simplifying this a little too much...

of course u have to buy quality - and a lot of high wattage systems are garbage for whatever reason, cheap internal bits, cheap actual speakers, etc etc, the list goes on. And a lot of "powerful systems" advertise power in PMPO, which is like theoritcal max wattage, which can only be held for like .5 seconds, then explosing or sumat. rms is the meausre of the max constant watts.

in terms of db tho...
3 db difference is double. the db scale works in 3s, every 3 it doubles. 103db = 3X 100 db. or some crazy like that i believe.

power is def a determinign factor in what your stereo/speakers/amp etc can do.

its how u use the power.

A 30 watt amp is only 2-3 dB quieter than a 60 watt amp. dB (the way we measure sound perceived sound levels) is a logarithmic scale, so you have to apply a lot more power to realize small gains in volume. By the dB scale, a 15-watt amp is not much quieter than a 60 watt amp...

^taken from another forum

A gain of 3 db takes doubled wattage, but it doesn't make the sound audibly 2 times as loud. 1 db is the lowest increment in volume change that the human ear can hear, so it's like 2 - 3 steps up.

I know many high end tube amps are very low in power output.. 10-40 watts. People pay hundreds and even thousands of dollars for them, despite the low power, because they go to adequate volumes but have a higher level of quality.
