A couple of days a go i brought a song of mine into a studio seekign to get it mastered. The engineer there is a pro who does a lot of pop music and bollywood films over here. hes also a straight shooter. all in all the kind of person i enjoy working with.
We loaded up all the individual tracks into cant remember what program he was using, basically full equed each tracj indivudually went thorugh all the elements of the track, added some reverb here and there, added some Slight compression to the fully mastered
Now im sure this sort of thing is quite expensive in a lo of countries but here it ended up costing me abooout 15 dollars an hour and it took about 2 hours to master the tune.
It sounds ing great now and i would play it in a club without a moments hesitation.
Anyone else done somethign similar and if so how much did u pay to get it done?
Track is over here

| I can tell you should be happy if mastering costs less than 50Euro, in that case it's a bargain already...70-80 Euro is about the normal price I think... I split costs on mastering my tracks with the label.. which eventually cost me 25Dollar per track |

yeah id be paying about 25 euro ish.
do most producers go elsewhere to get a tune mastered? it seems like the knowhow to properly mix/master would generally require some training and a proper enviroment to listen.. i have horrible monitors and a noisy apartment.
hmm a label.. gotta get me one of those... |

Havent done it for a while but last time was a shade over £120 for a 2 sided glass master plate ready for pressing up..... i think it was that much anyway- hazy memory as it was five or six years ago.
Porkys on shaftesbury avenue...one of the finest mastering suites and sets of ears you can get...along with masterpiece and the exchange (all in London unsurpisingly).
Will find out recent prices as I have some pressing to get done soon.
I am a firm believer in DIY- but not when it comes to mastering for pressing. Leave it to people who really know their and do it day in day out for a living. |

Yeah im not plannin to get anything pressed, just getting it to sound "finished" to to speak. i can imagine getting the plates and all that would cost a good bit as well. |

Never done that. Maybe I should... :/
Well, I guess it's better to learn the basics of mastering before letting someone else do it. Don't know why though, but to me it seems logical. |

| Is that the mastered and mixed version you posted? Because it's completely mono. |

I'd it for free but I think you should add in a bit more stereo stuff. Decent song, but its bland being dead center and never deviating. Mastering is definantly an art that takes a long time to learn but after 6 years going, I think i've erm, mastered it ;). But, I dont feel mastering should really cost anything. Its more of a... helping hand sort of deal. The sound engineer didnt do other than change the EQing of it and probably compressed it more. Why that costs money is beyond me. Whatever...

I hate to say it, but I really wouldn't call this track mastered at all. Besides, what you describe is mixing, not mastering. There's a big difference between the two. Mixing is primarily concerned with the individual instruments, while mastering is more about the sound as a whole - don't confuse the two processes. :)
Honestly, mastering would improve this mixdown tenfold (at least to my ears), even though I find the mixdown to be quite average. |

I haven't been producing seriously for that long, but I still find it strange how mastering is treated like some kind of voodoo mysticism on these boards.
Mastering only occurs on ONE stereo audio track (or sometimes 5 mono tracks for surround). It does not concern itself with individual instruments or parts.
Mastering by definition is just that - bringing up the master level of a track. It won't increase the clarity or sharpen or soften a track. It just makes it louder. That is why people say, the best mastering cannot help a poorly-mixed track, but a kick-ass mix can be utterly wrecked by a lousy master (i.e. overcompressing).
Usually, mastering is one or more of the following:
- EQ/frequency exciters
- Compression/multiband compression
- Stereo imaging
- Brickwall levelling
- Dithering to a lower bitrate
IMHO, you don't need to pay someone to do this - anyone can get themselves some pretty decent mastering tools (maybe not "the best" but "good enough") and learn to use them. The changes made to a track during mastering are always going to be very subtle, so if your track doesn't already sound good, then don't even bother trying to master it - fix the mix until it sounds good, THEN master it. |
