Right, in a vain attempt to get this thread back on-topic, and because the COR is so slow at getting news (I read this on Slashdot like, two days ago :p), it will interest the COR to know that...

They're sueing another 14 year-old

I somewhat agree with you, but if the RIAA is obtaining their informatrion in illegal ways (and they generally do), the evidence can not be used in court. It's no different than if the government used illegal methods and admitted to it; the cases are rightfully thrown out.

if they don't want to make hacking (a loose term for what's going on) legal for average people, then they can't allow corporations to do it.

I read about that, What happened was the RIAA couldn't sue the mother cause she wasnt responsible for downloading the music, When it was her daughter who actually did, So they dropped her case, And they are sueing the 14 year old instead, Which is still screwed anyways, Cause she might have to testify against her child since she did admit to the file sharing.

Actually it's not altogether illegal. For example, my cable providerr Optimum Online has a clause in their contract that they monitor all traffic that's why I recieved a letter from paramount threatning me. s. them and their boilerplate.

Yes, it certainly depends on your provider. Some not only have specified disclosure agreements weith the RIAA, but many, Internet Service Providers are owned by or are subsidiaries of majopr RIAA members. Time Warner is the best example of these.

Chances are, an agent working on behalf of Paramount found you sharing a movie and contacted your ISP. The ISP is bound by contract to turn you in; in return they may get advance relkeases on movies or other special offerdss. Or they may simply be afraid of being sued. Of course, Paramount may also own a controlling itnerest in them....

This post can basically be broken down like this:

- Downloading files such as music and movies that I don't own is illegal, and I know it man!
- As well as this, I even know that my ISP has a clause in my contract allowing the monitoring of my traffic.
- Ah, a tune/movie I like. I am going to download it.
- what's this? A threatening letter telling me to stop?
- ing s. them and their boilerplate! (whatever that is?)

Can you not see why this makes you look an idiot? It's like when someone gets caught speeding, then moans about the person who was just doing their job. We all know we're breaking the law, so why piss and moan when we have to face the consequences?

makes me look like an idiot? really? how do you know what i got the letter for? or do you know how i got out of it? no, so shut the up. I'm not googoly so don't even try that with me.

Are you sure you want to argue contracts with me? You don't even know what boilerplate is.

Here's another breakdown from that post.

-I know very well that my provider checks the traffic ( something I'll admitt i didn't know right of the bat but I do know )
-A tune and movie i downloaded and then liked ( in that order ) I will go buy or see
-Downloading and/or sharing files shouldn't be illegal because it's art and no one should hold control over expression and art. Though that is far from the truth. I know rich ass kids who are more spoiled than me who would still download tunes and movies because it's not something that should be charged! My opinion, I know and anyone in their right mind would agree. I would love to have a movie produced or a vinyl/cd out but i'd rather get money for it than become some stick-up-his-ass wanker
-When I got the letter I didn't panic one bit, like tribu (i think) mentioned, the people who get proper and royally ed don't know what they got or what to do with it.

pretty much you do, in fact, take a risk and most of us aren't willing to pay the consequences but it's never going to stop, it's only getting bigger and easier for people to pirate and share media :gsmile:
