i think it has to do with growing accustom to the way edm is produced. in general trance is often a gateway, as it has big catchy leads. very noticable and in your face. but i think as ones tastes develop and grow more appreciation is given to the progression and subtle changes found in more progressive generes. |
Thats what progressive trance is for. |

One only needs to look at the roots of all this music to know the answer.
House music was created largely by relatively modern-day black Americans who took existing instruments and sounds (in this case, of the electronic variety) and found ways to make them funky and cool by playing from the heart. It's the evolution of jazz, funk and soul, not counting the various tribal influences in some tracks.
Trance (or more specifically epic trance, as it is completely different from classic trance) was created by stuffy white Eurotrash academics following the rules set by Classical composers in the 17th to 19th century, and its legacy has been carried on by sweet-toothed candy kids with Attention Deficit Disorder and pirated copies of FruityLoops.
That should explain pretty well why today's trance has more instantaneous mass market appeal but house music kind of sneaks up on ya after a while. |
and you are getting this information from? |

I think Andrew's spot on about the catchy appeal of Trance music.
I always found house music (or more importantly the DDTT variety) to be grittier and just more earthy..
More carnal.
'Cause I like my music sexy, I loves me some DDTT. |

So I was reflecting this.
Now I thought I didn't like house. I dunno why, but it never appealed to me. But for last few months, I kept hearing house stuff and it just begun to seep into my mind so that my current fav is Coldplay - Speed of Sound (Steve Porter remix)
I also shook my ass more to Mark O's set more than rest of the djs except Ferry yesterday.
Gah! House! What have you done to my brain? |
Whatever you do, don't listen to it drunk. May cause a violent reaction.
Well, that happened to me anyway. |

Yes. I shake my booty to house and DDTT while I jump like freaking jalapeno. |

Aaron.....if you are drawing parallels (TRANCECRACKERS/CANDY KIDS WITH ADD).....let me draw some
NOT DIRECTED TO YOUR (AS USUAL) EDUCATIONALLY INSIGHTFUL POST - (DO NOT FLAME) :)
but for others who don't have the same grasp as your aformentioned musings... I would like to add some points for argument/discussion and to ponder.....
For some of the forums board members who are homophobic house heads -who make fun of teh "gay" trance music.....pay attention
not that it really matters (or should) in a negative WAY...but house is more "gay" than trance in the REAL history of the genre evolution....house takes its name (many say) from the WAREHOUSE in Chicago from the late seventies - FRANKIE KNUCKLES was the DJ at this club - he was a gay man - and most of the early house crowd in its infancy were trendy urban - blacks/gay/bisexual men and their fag hags......for 3 decades house has always commanded a huge gay following from commercial DIVA vocal house.....(disco basically) to the more full - on tribal house - popular among the circuit party crowd.
Straight culture has borrowed quite heavily in the last 30 years from gay culture (fashion/style/art/music...even mannerisms)....which is quite interesting....WHY YOU BITING OUR STYLES and act like they are yours.....whatever!!! Amusing - METROSEXUALS....the fully formed feminine aspect of the male ego - about time.....girls always want the gay guy cause he's hot and he can dance - everyone know this :)
HOUSE MUSIC IS INSIDIOUS in its ability to conjure the sexual freedom in the beats and harmonies - as gay culture is deemed as progressively and innately sexual - of course it's music would reflect that same sexual vibe (call it dirty/raw/hard/undulating/pulsating) all these adjectives are quite spot on...and the aspect of dancing itself is very sexual in nature as we are like peacocks on the dancefloor - strutting our stuff!
I sometimes brought up the aspect to hardcore hip hop people (who are black) that house/techno and hip hop grew out of the same black counter-cultures in essence - their roots are quite intertwined....so dont bash house/techno as "GAY" music because its like calling your father or grandfather a homo (know your history and respect its beginnings - for we wouldn't be here now without it!)
It is quite true modern trance is a mainly white European offshoot of the Afro-American Detroit techno scene.....but that lends alot to the fact of some the early pioneers of electronic art music were German and a culture of EDM distinctively was embraced and flourished as a collective of fresh ideas..... Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schultz, in the sixties and seventies....
quoted from wikipedia...
"Electro (also known as electro funk) is an electronic style of hip hop directly influenced by Kraftwerk and funk records (unlike earlier rap records that were closer to disco).
Afrika Bambaataa's Planet Rock (1982) is one of the first electro records, using elements of Kraftwerk's Trans-Europe Express and Numbers.
With the rise of interest in this overlooked period of hip hop, the history of electro's development and its indisputable power to move the body will resurface again and again. As hip hop moves farther away from its origins as a DJ-centered art form, the revival of electro among techno enthusiasts will bring the DJ back to the center of the action."
this marriage of European synthesizer sequencer music with Black funk and soul is what created house music and especially the electro house sound that is so popular now with DJ's like Lawler, Mylo, Eric Prydz, even Digweed now.....these sounds are what the bulk of TA's are referencing when they proclaim their love for teh UBERHAUS.....
trance and house crowds for a couple of years were quite like minded with the progressive sounds coming out in late 2000-2003 - both elements were represented - (house rhythms/vocals - heavily sequenced trance/proggy repetitive midlines)...SYSTEM BREATHE parties during these years WERE OFF THE HOOK - you cant deny that.....but over the last couple of years - the COMMERCIAL sound of house has gone back to its earlier roots (makes sense we are upon the 20th anniversary of alot of these sounds - and most dance music is cyclical in its various progression/rebirths) and that is why you have such divides between the house and trance camps now IMO - because PROGRESSIVE became a dirty word and everyone jumped off the bandwagon and went retro electro....so now you have a stark divide again between the 2 genres and a newly favoured cult of "my EDM sounds are cooler/better/more valid/underground/less gay than your sounds"
COMMERCIAL ELECTRO - EPIC CHEESE such negative comments from biased opinion slanderings
so again - as with the HIP HOP/HOUSE argument - it stands true to argue again - HOUSE and TRANCE are all brothers/sisters/cousins in the family of EDM - neither one could really exist without the other
- respect your family members and know your roots of EDM lineage....
IMO - a true aspect of the EDM cultured individual is to accept and acknowledge all forms of EDM - wether bi-partisan or not of favouritism - and find wonderment and validity in all its creative forms....
BLACK/WHITE - AMERICAN/EUROPEAN - STRAIGHT/GAY - HOUSE/TRANCE....
RESPECT YOUR EDM - IT HAS NO REAL BOUNDERIES - WHY CREATE THEM????
:D |

Well, My introduction to the EDM scene was House music in the 80's partying it up as a youngin at RPM (Now Guverment), and back in those days all that was being played in the clubs was House and Hip Hop. I remember a club called Focus off of Yonge north of Wellesley... Innercity, Industry.. etc. Hip Hop and House were always being played hand in hand. I luv all EDM...th e majority.. sorry but I still say I hate Disco House.. Not old school style Disco..the origianl stuff from the 70's but the new Disco house..eww. Hey! that's My OP. i'm entitled. and u're right Sean, it's all intertwined believe it or not. Even Hip Hop is a distant cousin of EDM since they both used sampling and the use of electronic sounds to create THEIR own.
It's getting pretty cliche to become a Trance basher...just like a Tiesto basher, and I personally have seen the change of preference of many TA's on here...which is great for their musical journey in life. I've seen die hard Trance fans on TA ...now turned House heads. Nothing wrong with that.. but u've become exactly what u used to despise back then ...when u first joined and discovered Trance. |

why is house so insidious?
Because it's the originator of all our party music. Sooner or later, if you hang in with EDM long enough you'll always gain an appreciation for it. It has so much diversity in it's sub-styles anyone can find something they enjoy, and in all the styles of house music it's always remained true to it's groovy soulful origins.
I can't count the amount of people I've met that have started with nothing but utter contempt for house, only to fall in love with it 3 years later.
As Jack once said 'house music is all about a good time'.
Oh and for anyone wanting to learn the origins of all modern dance music [and subsequently the history of house] try to find the 'pump up the volume' documentary series online. One of the best downloads I've ever had. It really opened my eyes to how far back the roots of the music goes. |
