My mom died of cancer at age 41 in 1988. No one else in her family before her had any type of cancer of any kind, and no one else has since. The catch...she smoked. And had she known back then what is known now about the dangers of cigarettes and second hand smoke, I can say with alot of certainty that she would have never started.
I can't speak for everyone who has ever lost someone important to them to cancer-related smoking, but I can speak for a few people who I also know lost loved ones; sue the f**kers!!! I hope these lawsuits are what finally puts them all under. They have literally been getting away with murder for decades, and only recently have they actually acknowledged that they sell a product that is PROVEN to cause smokers and people around them (i.e.second-hand smoke) life-threatening consequences. They are starting, then feeding additions and profiting off it.
And if Ontario jumps on this lawsuit bandwagon...I'm riding it, not for the money....but to hit them where it hurts them the most (their pockets) for the unethical manner in which they produce a life-threatening/shortening product and sell it to the public. |
sorry to hear about your mom but i still cant support this move. What if in the future it is found that exposure to cell phones can cause cancer? And what if people still use them anyways? |

I see your point....but cell-phones are not addictive (at least for most).
They advertise to people get them to take that first puff, and human physiology dictates what happens from there. Starting smoking is a choice....continuing to smoke isn't for many. |

many things are addictive....
gambling, alchohol, sex, drugs, food, chocolate
you name it. |

I wouldn't classify the above (except for some drugs, and foods which it takes ALOT of to start to cause serious health problems) in the same category as smoking, which is physiologically addictive.
I appreciate your point, and my opinion is somewhat biased based on past events. But I fully support these laysuits. Retribution, distain to tobacco companies, call it what you want....
they have been getting away with too much too long. Covering up the dangers of smoking, mass-media advertising, super-sizing cigarettes, flavoring them....all to sell more and make more profit.
That is all I will say on this topic. |

I am sorry to hear about your mom as well; unfortunately, spite is not a valid argument. I think it's more than fair to say that just about everyone who still smokes today is well aware of the risk. How much more awareness do you want than a big-ass warning on the package that says "DANGER: USING THIS PRODUCT MAY KILL YOU!"??
And don't even try to use the "they know the risks now but they got addicted before they knew the risks" argument. People who are addicted to alcohol, meth, cocaine, heroin, whatever, go through detox - they find a way to quit. And yes, alcohol IS physiologically addictive. There are MANY resources available today to help stop smoking - if people CHOOSE not to use them, that is THEIR problem. |

Basically, everything we do leads us closer to death...second hand smoke is bad for you...well so is second hand fumes from a car...so is second hand sweat from the guy who rubs against you with his shirt off at the club.
The government is as much to blame for this as tobacco companies. I believe that tobacco companies need to be forced not to put as many chemicals in their smokes.....the funny thing is most of the chemicals in cigarettes are found in the filter. When I was in Thunder Bay I use to smoke "natural" cigarettes. They were basically just dried tobacco, tar and nicotine...smelt like but still got the job done. |

Average retail price*: $66.43
Excise Duty $15.85
GST $4.54
Provincial Tobacco Tax $23.45
Total taxes:$43.84 or 66%
These estimates are based on a survey commissioned by Imperial Tobacco Canada, which reflects tax levels as of May 17, 2005.
It looks like the province makes out pretty good |

cigarettes are the only legal product sold in canada, that when used PROPERLY has only negative effects.
I do hope one day down the road cigarettes will be banned completely. I accept the fact that this may take years..but maybe for my grandchildren...
that being said, i don't think suing the companies is the way to do it. for once, i actually agree with the point jayxi has made.
excuse me..i need to die of shock now |

Second, it doesn't matter how much money they make, that doesn't make it OK to steal from them.
