Seriously... what the hell is wrong with you? Do you honestly believe that just because someone or something has a lot of money, it's there for everyone else to take? Are you one of these cranks who thinks that whoever is making the most money should pay everyone else's bills? Don't expect to make many [successful] friends with that kind of attitude...
Most people are pretty decent and will occasionally treat their friends and/or give to charity; but when it becomes expected (or worse, forced) then they will resent it. I resent your attitude on a personal level, and I'm thankful that my own friends and associates don't have the gall to demand money from me just because I *have* it. |

Would you really let someone die horribly, alone and in pain, just because they made the mistake of smoking? That would be a pretty cold hearted medical system..."well we see you smoked for a few years, so we're not going to treat you. You have 6 months to live and you die a slow, excruciating death in front of everyone you know."
I guess we should do the same for obese people with eating disorders too. You ate too much bad foods fatty, so we're not covering that triple bypass that will save your life!
This is what will happen when you leave Healthcare in the hands of insurance companies. |

Absolutely not. I think anyone with illness should be treated no questions asked. However, giving them a bill after treatment is something that Health Canada should consider IF they are worried about the cost of treating smoking related injury.
As already pointed out in this thread, it is clear that the government is just using 'health care costs of smoking related disease' as yet another means of sucking more cash out of tobacco companies. I'm pretty sure that all the tax revenue made off tobacco companies far exceeds what they will ever dish out in health care bills. |

You open up a huge can of worms though by descriminating against people because they smoke and making them pay for services. If you do that then you have to turn around and make people pay for any illness treated that was brought on due to an unhealthy lifestyle. You are better off privatising the health industry.
When the provincial government is taking in 1/3 of the cost of a carton of cigarettes in tax money....I say they are doing pretty good. |

a lot of people make choices whose consequences they must live with. Its not up to the government to be everyone's nanny. If you make choices to smoke or eat fatty foods or drink or whatever then you live with the consequnces of the choice made. |

No, if the government is going to use the health care system to hold our lifestyle choices as hostage then they should get out of the business of health care.
Health care is there to take care of us no matter what choices we make. If the government isnt prepared to live up to this then there are plenty of private companies that will. |
