First Gig!! - Here's how it went

I arrive there (club/venue) at 9:30, unbelievably in' scared.

They show me the channels that are hooked up and the basics of the mixer.

At 10 oclock the guy said I can start, so I start the record put the gain up, what do ya know, no sound... no kidding channel fader wasn't up. No biggie. Start record over but put up the vol.

First few mixes were dodgy (slightly so though) nervous as hell, no croud interaction, just complete CONCENTRATING on matching the beats. (I brought along a sorted tracklist of 21 that I would play from beginning to end)

Boy did that turn out different. I was playing and noticed that I almost mixed all the records!! (And I was still a good 45 min. away from finished.... so yes....I did some improv!!! (Holy for me) - I had extra records besides those 21... later and later into my set, I just nailed every mix (A few were a bit off, but I quickly fixed them) and started bopping my head more, and loosening up.

Then the inevitable... two girls (good looking though) asked for hip hop :D I read some here and there on the net (luckily) so I used the coined phrase "I'll check but I think i left it at home" the girl gave me a , and I said "this is a house party" (IE not hip hop, but house music) meanwhile the mix is starting to train wreck, so I somehow managed to crash it out. (note I had to crash out a few mixes that were turning into train wrecks...but read on) Meanwhile a group of somewhat successful djs are sitting at a table drinking beside the booth,...talk about pressure.

I finish, and the owner says that was real good, get complimented. the DJ (guy up next) says it was great...later we talked and he said even the few mistakes were HARDLY noticable. :D :D Long story short, went well... and I went from "oh I play in....10 MINUITES AHHHHH!! " to.... "When the is my next gig!" :D

I just got home from this btw, and yers this was a long post..

funny how nervousness affects you. you must have been speeding through those 21 tracks. slow down and relax!!

keep on practising dude. the more gigs you play, the more confidence you'll have.

lol @ those girls. thought you were going to say they wanted to get it on with ya. oh wells, maybe next time :p

good job. have fun at the next one.

Nice one, and yes it can be a scary business no doubt.

And you always get people coming up and asking for that ridiculous no go tune. Either something that's a totally different style, wrong for the slot or just simply doesn't feel right.

When warming up I usually keep it quite reserved until about 11pm when people start coming into the club. Before that it's usually dead on the floor anyway.

Then the last 30 mins up to 12 I start cranking it up to get the excitement going.

Well done though and your confidence will grow.

Cheers

So cool, my first gig has yet to come. I can imagine how relieving it is to have finally finished your very first gig. :)

what i find useful to do when you are playing your first gig at an unfamilar venue (or even your first EVER gig) is to get all your friends (and their friends (and their friends mothers)) to go down to the club to support ya. definatly helps ur nerves because you know if you up at all theyre still gonna dance their assi off for you. helped me a bunch my first time out and i ended up with a residency

congrats and glad it went well! were you knackerd after you finished?

i remember my first proper club set... it was on a dj comp.. (but one that was really hard to get into.. its a 2500 capacity superclub called the dance academy in plymouth) two djs were before me and played a load of hardstyle... my music is like 10bpm slower than theirs! anyways i thought maybe it was a good idea to notch up a few % and start with a track with a long build- 2mins long.. just to unacustom the punters from the 150bpm they had been dancin to. that worked well. but because i was used to some new vestax and hadnt had much experience on worn out tech's i spent almost every mix on a learning curve. anyways my friend filmed my set and every track mixed very smooth aprt from one going off slightly. it was the best night ever!

No, you can't! ;) :)

The only thing was that very few were dancing (in fact no-one) however I DID increase the intensity and the last 30 minutes if my set I played some banging tunes. (IE I saw people clearly bopping their heads like mad, but still not drunk enough yet, to actually let loose and dance, but I guess that is what my job is, however everyone I talked to said the music WAS good.

Problem though, is that I got a DJ name very hastily (actually, it was somewhat given to me)and now that is being put on the fliers, and the next party's fliers, What to do, what to do...

No. :(

My last name is Ragalyi (pronouned 'ruh'gah eee'

And my DJ name is 'Rawguy' [ A friend wrote that on the demo cd I sent to the venue.

now that is what the owner is putting on the fliers. (for this evcent and for the next one)

At first I wanted to used my full name, but then I figured it's not easily pronounced either (well it is, if you know HOW to pronounce it)

Yea, after the set, I felt soo damn good. Literally like a drug. Especially knowing that I had at least managed not to whack the needle or take the needle of the wrong record. :D (Those were one of my bigger fears)

Same as you, this was a learning curve for me, because at home it is nothing like it. Weird thing was that it was easier to mix in the club than in my bedroom!
