ok well a cpl of things pop in2 my head here:

firstly I was reading the newspaper yesterday sumfin about how NAtional Bank were increasing their monthly account keeping fees by a faaaaaarking whopping 50% to $6/mth. Now multiply that by 12 and the number of customers they have and that starts to seriously add up !!!

the best bit was in the next paragraph by some 'regulating' dimwad that, in response to ppl asking how on earth the NAB could possibly continue to increase account fees when they already know they rob their 'customers' blind, replied with 'because they can' :)

this I believe is the philosophy Scum$tra have - 'because they can'

it is the exact same thing that happens with plane trip prices. as soon as one company drops prices the others do, and usually on the same day.

i say bring on the competition NOW !!!

BJeT (happy with MY dialup isp but NEEDS BB NOW !!!!)

oh yeah BTW I use the T3 line at the uni I go to and then have to come home to dialup - it nearly kills my just dl my email each night hehe - how do ya like them apples :)

fear not, as there is a new ADSL provider just around the corner. XIS, a brisbane based company has ADSL, for businesses with 3gig caps. BUT a new home account will supply unlimtied downlaod ADSL wit hunlimtied time for $99 a month without an ADSL modem, or $129 a month wit han ADSL modem. If u sign up in feb u get a contract that is locked for 12 months, meaning the ISP cannot cap your downlaods!! Although the speed is somewhat limited due to the fact that it is unlimtied, but still fast! 256/64 bits. Or for all that don't know how to work out bytes. 31/8k
fast enough for me is say!

Yeah but contracts don't mean .

I signed a contract with Telstra "Freedom Plus" which entitled me to unlimited downloads - within reason anyway. What happened to that.

A company won't bother offering good deals unless it needs to in order to be competitive. Therefore, if you're in a oligopolic industry (banks, telecommunications, service stations) where there are very few independant companies in "competition" with each other, it's pretty easy to price fix for the mutual advantage of the industry. Only problem is, while this sort of thing is good for the parties involved, it's bad for the rest of the country.

I've studied economics for the past 3 years at both school and uni, and I can you right now that if John Howard doesn't force these industries to be competitive in a true capitalist environment, the dollar is going to keep dropping and inflation (both demand-push and cost-pull) will increase. Simple laws of supply-side competition.

I think this Telstra bull is just a typical example of what happens when you give an industry that degree of capitalist freedom without also providing it with the competition necessary for its privitisation to mean anything.

The real crux of the problem with telstra is that we are damned with them and damned without.
If Telstra was completely privatised I cant imagine any other company upgrading or putting in new technology unless they where forced too by government contracts or could find some way of making money out of it, given the current IT/net backlash there isnt a lot of money to be made "apparently".

I had Bigpond telstra cable when it first came out and by god it was expensive, it actually was ok for awile and then they overloaded their routers and went belly up, it wasnt long before I switched over to Optus.
No real complaints with Optus cable so far, compared to BPA its a godsend.

The main reason telstra has implemented these chages EG the speed cap and then the downlaod limit is because i heard from unconfirmed reports there main system hasn't been upgraded one since 1995! not atalknig about the exchanges or anything, but it seems they can't handle the amout of data that is coming in and going. This 4billion dollar profit company should spend a good deal of 1billiob towards getting better equipment!

here is the thread from Whirlpool about the XIS deal - check it out

http://whirlpool.net.au/article.cfm/683

I think I will wait for my ISP a pl more months and see what they can offer and if that falls in the arse then I will wait another year to get O@H

in case u haven't worked it out by now I H8 Scum$Tra for a number of diff reasons. Obvioulsy they are robbing every1 blind, and not just those ppl who use them for the 'net.

I am getting near the stage where I really need BB and at the very least 256/64 but it HAS 2 b uncapped and unlimited. I have some really good ideas floating around my head that I wanna start developing.

I don't wanna have 2 b thinking about wot my monthly limit currently is if I have some work that I need to get done but can't because Scum$tra can't be stuffed dipping in2 their $4b annual profit to upgrade their infrastrucutre to deal with the demand on their networks.

What I find is the most ironic is that they are unable to provide BB in the true sense of the word (I mean look at some of the infrastructure that countries like Sweden have !!) but CONTINUE to sign up customers - it simply isn't fair
