was just wondering who here in the land of Oz is lucky enuff to have ADSL or even cable ? and how much do u pay for it ? and do they cap dl/ul data transfer and/or speedz ?
with my isp (AINS) i can dl/ul and spend as much time on the net as I like for justn 75$ a quarter which i think is a good deal
my isp (www.ains.net.au) is hopefully going to be able to provide early 2002 as per the Xmas letter which they sent out:
Home ADSL. I know I have been saying that this has been coming for quite a while now. Unfortunately with Telstra's wholesale tariff, it was simply impossible for us to provide a home ADSL service at an affordable rate (sub $70 per month). The good news is however, Telstra is now forced to release it's copper lines at a much more affordable price and we will begin a fresh round of negatiations next year. If everything goes well, AINS will have an excellent high speed ADSL service at a great price, by late March or early April. |

heheh, ya i'm lucky to get cable in sydney (optus@home)
...i think it's about $70/month but my dad pays for it :D:D:D
it's better value for us 'cos at $25/month line + ~$30/month calls (for dialup access) you're paying a bit more, but getting a much faster permanent connection
unfortunately not even adsl is available at my house in canberra :(:(:(...we're like 1.5km outside it's limits
arggghh...and cable...they didn't even know such a thing was invented there!!! :D:D:D
well...dialup works, but it sux...shouldn't complain tho, better than nothing at least 'cos there's not much else to do there :):):)

so is ur speed capped so like you can't go any faster than say 50K/sec or is it uncapped ?
and is there a monthly limit on the data that u can dl/ul like the 3Gb that Telstra has recently introduced ?
Cheers

I wanna get all of this info out of my isp in the next couple of weeks |

hmm, afaik downspeed is uncapped
...tho the most i've ever got was about 400kB/s from a brisbane ftp
...i have heard some ppl getting 1.5+MB/s but i'm not sure what kind of xfer it was
anyway, there is a d/l limit in that the average d/l for all users is calculated daily...then ur 14-day average is compared to the mean & u get a warning at 8x the average & are supposed to get into trouble at 10x the average

this is the picture u get as part of ur netstat's usage from optus
the last few weeks have been relatively slow (for this house anyway :D:D:D)...
23/12/01 - 27/12/01 1.54G
16/12/01 - 22/12/01 2.83G
09/12/01 - 15/12/01 3.45G
02/12/01 - 08/12/01 734.64M
25/11/01 - 01/12/01 3.42G
18/11/01 - 24/11/01 2.05G
11/11/01 - 17/11/01 5.10G
04/11/01 - 10/11/01 2.94G
28/10/01 - 03/11/01 4.37G
that's the history since i installed dumeter, i think the average has been about 4-6 on the netstats meter, tho we used to average about 7-9 :):):)
definitely out of the two, i think optus is much better value seeing as i believe the service is relatively the same, just with optus u get a much more generous d/l limit...and optus has dedicated games servers :D:D:D...only 32 player cs with less than 100 ping for me hehehe!!!...actually it's about 40-60 ping normally

Yeah, get Optus anyway, it's a good service.
I'd have it if it was available where I live, but I'm stuck with Telstra cable, which means a 3gb download cap, slower download speeds, and just general crapness.
Get Optus, it's worth it. |

iPrimus. Yay. About exactly the same deal as u BJet :(
i hate telstra
optus hate my location
where can a man go in AU for bandwidth !!!!! |
|

yeah well i did think that iPrimus might be a goer but when I checked out their website they had all of this and that cap/dl/limit bullshiat so i blew them off
my isp sent me an email (think I posted it above) saying that Telstra have now been made to open up their copperwire lines so don't be surprised if u start 2 c more isps starting to offer BB
if u wanna keep up with BB downunder check out www.whirlpool.net.au/

| O@H user since may 2000. Will not swap it for anything :) I feel sorry for my friends who are stuck with tel$tra, as optus doesn't service their area... ADSL will indeed see a rapid expansion in the coming months, but at the moment I'm not aware of flat rate plans.. and the ones I've seen have limits like 500MB/month (who are they kidding...) |

Well I hope so. At least it'd get rid of the Telstra monopoly and give us a choice with regards to who's offering the best deal instead of just having to put up with Telstra's bull.
I'm suprised it hasn't happened earlier to be honest, seeing as one of the Howard government's primary reasons for selling off Telstra was to increase competition...... still haven't seen too many signs of that eh (One Tel anyone)? :-/

Yeah.
I'd also like to point to something else to show how much of a ripoff telstra are:
BredBandBolaget in sweden offer Unlimited/Uncapped Full Duplex 10mbit up&downstream line for $10us/month.
Compare that with Tel$tra... 3gig limit/capped @ 512k down & 256kup for the equiv. of about $160us/month.
Surely thats robbery. :(
PS: That & The hot chicks are the 2 reasons in me wanting to move to sweden. Where the girls are Blonde, Big Breasted & the Broadband is Cheap!!!
