Bill Watterson remains private, 10 years after strip's end

Monday, October 24, 2005 Posted: 1957 GMT (0357 HKT)

CHAGRIN FALLS, Ohio (AP) -- Maybe someday, officials will put up a statue marking this quaint village as the birthplace of "Calvin and Hobbes."

Just don't expect cartoonist Bill Watterson to attend the unveiling ceremony. It's been nearly 10 years since he abruptly quit drawing one of the most popular comic strips of all time. Since then, he's been as absent as the precocious Calvin and his pet tiger, err, stuffed animal, Hobbes.

Some call Watterson reclusive. Others say he just likes his privacy.

# The strip ran from November 18, 1985, to December 31, 1995. The first strip was of Calvin catching Hobbes in a tiger trap with a tuna fish sandwich as the bait.

# Calvin is named for a 16th-century theologian who believed in predestination.

# Hobbes is named after a 17th-century philosopher with a dim view of human nature.

# Calvin's parents were never given names because Watterson felt as far as the strip was concerned they were important only as Calvin's mom and dad.

# Watterson was a failed political cartoonist who was fired from his first job at The Cincinnati Post after a few months.

# Watterson passed up millions of dollars by refusing to allow "Calvin and Hobbes" merchandising, feeling it would violate the spirit of the strip. So those decals you see of Calvin praying or Calvin urinating are being done without Watterson's blessing -- or permission.

I believe that Calvin & Hobbes sucked. I didn't laugh or chuckle or even crack a slight smile, not even once.

Calvin and Hobbes are easily one of the best comics ever created.

i read them when i was in grade 5 and loved them

i read them now and still love them (and get more of the humor)

And i fully respect Bill Watterson's decision to prohibit the commercialization of the strip, it makes each comic so much more special.

this is a good (and long) insight into the world of C+H and Mr. Watterson

Calvin and Hobbes is and will always be an awesome comic strip. I remember reading volumes of the comic for hours when I was a little kiddo! I even clipped the last strip out of the paper and saved it :)

Calvin and Hobbes is one of those timeless strips; Funny regardless of your age.

Not to mention Calvin is the most relatable fictional character (to me) I have ever come across. I wouldn't be suprised if Waterson continued the strip that Calvin wouldn't want to be a dj;)

And i MUST get that collectors edition set:eyes:
