And they never break either. I've seen Thinkpads fall down a flight of stairs at school after falling out of a bag, and they work fine. Any other brand, I ing doubt that.
You get what you pay for. IBM it is for me when it comes laptop time again. |
i thought you were a huge vaio x505 fan? |

Yes, for it's size and portability, not for its price ($3000+ USD, ouch).
I'll take a Thinkpad X40 realistically, please. |

Anyone know any sites or anything that have that Knoppix program or some boot program, so I can put that on disc, and then try to recover some files? then I can at least recover some files before I reinstall windows again.
if i can just use a boot program to recover some files, instead of having to take the damn drive out, put in another computer, take stuff off, format the drive and all that, and hook it back up again, that would be awesome.
and also, can you briefly jsut tell me the steps to recover some files with a boot program? i do have an external drive if that helps
btw, it is just one hdd drive with 2 partions for the C: and D: |

Dan, seriously, it's going to be much more painful to use the recovery app. If gek0's done it before, he can remove the drive, transfer the files, reinstall it, reformat it, and move the files back with MUCH LESS pain that it would be to 'recover' them.
Additionally, data recovery will typically give you 8 character filenames. All of your DJ Tiesto MP3s would be named
DJTIES~1.mp3
DJTIES~2.mp3
DJTIES~3.mp3
DJTIES~4.mp3
DJTIES~5.mp3
DJTIES~6.mp3
DJTIES~7.mp3
DJTIES~8.mp3
DJTIES~9.mp3
DJTIE~10.mp3
DJTIE~11.mp3
and so on...
Regardless, take out the drive. It's a painlass process. |

God .. i really must say .. watching some people talk about computers is much like people trying to tell me how their JVC or Sony or Rockford Fosgate car audio is amazing .. lol
sometimes people just need to shutup :)
.. i'll fix his computer for him tomorrow ... as for backup ...Tape Drives are a huge waste of money .. as is File Servers ... only such things are needed in businesses...
a simple external drive would do .. hell .. even a cd burner or dvd burner with a few dvds / cds would do for most people..
I've never backed up for ages! ... I dont think ive had a harddrive crash for 10 years... yes i know im lucky but still .. if pictures are soo valueable to you .. burn them dumbass ...
and to finish off ... no more talk ill fix him up tomorrow .. format and reinstall winXp pro for him .. and set him on his way ..
I find this kinda funny .. its like teenage girls using computers and getting viruses all the time and saying their computer doesnt work .. lol |

I've had an IBM Deskstar 75GXP DTLA3030 (the ones with massive failure rates, like 70%+) last for over 3 years, when IBM told me it probably wouldn't last 6 months.
Well last May one of them (I had 2 in a RAID-0 config) literally blew up inside my case. It had blown itself apart, and destroyed my motherboard in the process.
It was ing AWESOME. |

The price of doing something about backups is always too much until you lose everything. :)
This goes for anyone, especially with the amount of info we store on computers today (pictures, music, etc.), DO BACKUPS. Go buy yourself 160GB HD and get an external enclosure for it. May cost you $200 and you've now got a way to backup everything (for most people). Use something like Symantec Ghost to image your machine weekly.
If that's too much or too hard, don't cry when something goes wrong and you lose something (or everything).
The 'get an Apple comment' .. hahah, it's hardware my friend, it all fails from time to time. |

For 500GB of media? What's important to you is not necessarily judged with the same impact by someone else.

That makes you an idiot if you recommend your "don't worry, it won't happen to you" philosophy on others. I'm sure we won't hear about it, but you just cursed yourself into an irrecoverable drive crash by year's end.
Hey Dan, just so you know, it IS possible your data is ed and you may never retrieve it. While you're sweating now, take backup precautions next time. But take them from your buddy, because apparently he's God and the rest of us are idiots who just need to shutup. |

Good luck if the partition table is gone! I hope you've got some low-level imaging utilities.

Okay... tell me what else I should use to back up 1100 GB of data spanning 9 drives. :toothless |

You must be too lazy to burn all of it onto DVDs. I mean, it's not like having that much data is ever involved in a project where you might rename some files or rearrange them. |
