Couldn't agree more. It's just a mere production tool that shouldn't be talked about as much. It's ok for housey/clubby tracks, though in my opinion in really kills the trancey feel of a track.

I honestly can't stand the sound in a track trance, as DigiNut says, it sounds really really annoying. Heck, it even sometimes makes the track sound overcompressed and thus kind of amateurish to my ears.

Indeed, one big shame.

Listen to Darren Tate's latest ep, full of sidechaining sillyness... One bloody awful ep in my opinion.

Yeah, cuz sidechaining is for lazy people.
In the end it became nothing else than the standard PvD-Offbeat-Bass which he used in dozens of his productions.

One of the best basslines every has to be Mystery - Fever

Such energy, so clear, so driving. And yet it retains a delicacy to it that trance should have.

as allcentury18 said ferry used sidechain on his pads?, can you give me a bit of a hint of what it would sound and even state the name of the song.

obviously it brings out the synth melodies and pads more without being destructive of the frequencies.

just curious! cheers

You can still write bassline while sidechaining it..
It gives the kick more power.
I don't understand why ppl see the devil behind sidechaining, it just need to be subtle..

Ok an example of sidechaining:

I like the first one and the second one just kills the track..

OMFG TUNE!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyman, where can i get hold of/listen to some of your tunes?
They are insanly good!

I kinda like it, but only in house, and it has to be used in moderation. Having that effect in every track is no less annoying than an epic trance set with 2 minute long breakdowns on every track. It's a great effect, but don't overdo it!

If the music is good, seriously, who gives a damn how it's compressed? It's a matter of taste and preference, anyway. If it's used carefully or effectively, why not?

Freak
Its been a standard process in most tracks for years- just subtley.

The overcompressed french sound is what suffers from overkill- NOT the actual usage of a key/chain.
Standardform
couldn't agree more. I mean its pretty obvious why its standard practice in house and trance as a subtle dynamic effect. It gives the all important kick drum room to kick. It is somewhat amusing when its used Benassi-style with a huge threshold and practically infinite ratio. :D
