Being used subtle would indeed be the key, though it's not really necesary either. People kind of seem 'amazed' when a producer DOESN'T use that effect, which is kind of silly.
The Eric Prudz kind of 'sidechaining' is just plain awful. |

| i love sidechaining! it's usually so soft and clicky. gives the track some cushion for the pushing. too bad every ty track ever made has sidechain compression in it. but a good melody/pad + sidechaining = great :D |

Well, let's put it this way... If Rank 1 made Airwave with the current sidechaining hype, it'd be pure crap.
Really, I don't think that gated sidechaining effect belongs in real trance music. |

| Sidechaining is great in progressive, the best tracks has sidechain, the bassline sounds so much better |

It gives the kick more power.
I don't understand why ppl see the devil behind sidechaining, it just need to be subtle..
Ok an example of sidechaining:

I like the first one and the second one just kills the track.. |
Yes, you're absolutely right.
It's just that every thread and post about "sidechaining" on this forum is always referring to that stupid overcompressed effect. Actually, I hate to be an ass, but I think many members of this forum don't quite understand the concept of subtlety in general. :p
The actual word sidechain doesn't even have anything to do with the kick or the bass... it's really annoying to hear it misused so often. |

I just wanted to notice that the samples I posted before are NOT FROM ME. :)
The first one is a Mike Foyle track.
Can't remember who produced the second one. |

On the contrary I think everyone here knows exactly what a sidechain is! But since the thread started off by commenting on the frequent over compression and abuse of it everyones just saying "sidechaining" instead!
All I initially meant was that recently use of dynamics has been the thing producers have been experimenting with which sometimes just means crank every knob to the hardest settings :) |

haha, i do admit its annoying to hear soooo many tracks that overuse sidechaining, but that doesnt mean you cant write a nice bassline and use sidechaining!
i tried it myself click here
kick sounds a bit weak, just loaded that sample quickly. |

True :)
Problem is everyone who talks about sidechaning is referring to the overcompressed, dull and amateurish sound (as mentioned above). However, since Eric Prydz got famous with his 'stuff', it'll be an easy deal for other 'producers' to follow the trend until the sound has lost ALL of its appeal. Happens everytime sadly enough.
Doesn't work for me at all though lol... |

| Personally I don't see a problem with a side chained bassline running together with another sort of bassline, but subtly in the background of course.. It will be overused like you say, and I think bitcrushing is going to be done to death on that note too. |
