How does one become a successful DJ?

| How did Tiesto/AVB/PVD get to where they are? Didn't they start off playing other people's music before they started producing their own? Even then, don't a lot of DJ's now that are famous play other DJ's tracks? So my question is, how does one get to the top if you are at a level where you are not producing your own music? |

I'm guessing this is some sort of stirring by the number of times you mentioned about playing other peoples music.
Its very simple, and not rocket science to work out. They started off playing in local clubs, built up a reputation for being good, moved into bigger events, built up a fan base, then bigger events, bigger fanbase, then bigger events such as Innercity, Dance Valley etc, really increased their fan base, got lots of exposure, then started to go off aorund the world, building up their fan base even more. That and marketing themselves endlessly, getting on radio shows, making themselves seen. |

| Everyone here forgot one key aspect of the mix. Producing. Tiesto has said it himself multiple times, if you don't produce, you won't hit it big. |

Anyway, yeah, producing is what will get you to the top. You can be a truly amazing and inspiration DJ with good tracks, a good fan base and playing large events, but until you can keep a crowd at your fingertips with your own productions, you'll never make it to where they are. :) |
