How to prevent your track from being leaked on the internet

So you finished a brilliant new track and now it gets spread in p2p programs and on internet websites?
I've worked out a way on how to prevent that in the future and how to find out who shared your track.
Make simular versions, but just change some detail, for example add an extra crash sound or change something else, and write down which version you send to everybody.
If you find your track on the net, just check which version it is and you know who leaked it...
Cheers,
Marcel :) |

Hmm, thats quite a nice idea, didnt think of that possibility.
But it's a lot of effort. I'd probably be to lazy for this. The pros should do it, but IMO its a little paranoid for an amateur producer to build a different version for each one he sends the file to. |

Hey. Isnt the whole idea to get your music out there and heard :conf:? If its a great track, and people like it, I think its for the best that it gets 'leaked' :). Unless you are trying to shock the hell out of people, why bother keeping it under wraps when you can be getting input from a larger audience. Then you really know what everyone wants out of the song ;).

Adding just a little effect to every version shouldn't be that much work. Or just make a certain hi-hat a little louder or something. |

Imagine you got your track signed. Then you wouldn't like to see it illegaly floating around on the internet, would you? |

Honestly, I wouldnt care. I dont do it for the money bud. I do it simply because I enjoy making music and I enjoy it even more when I see that other people are enjoying it. Seeing it on the net for free download, and getting downloaded a lot would put a big smile on my face. True enough that I wont be getting any money out of it, but its not like I'm making music and expect to be compensated for my 'services'. Are you telling me that you would be so crushed to see your brand new hit on some site up for free dload, that you would just give up composing? I'm thinking the answer to that is no and it definitely should be no. Produce for the love, not the money :), youll last longer ;).

Being shared on P2P programs doesn't bother me. I always like searching for my tracks and seeing which ones are shared on which networks :D
And in reality, there is almost nothing you can do to avoid it. The labels realize, do all they can about it, but ultimatly their efforts are futile.
Even if you don't send it to anyone and only sell copies, someone will just share a copy that they bought... where do you think most pirated software comes from? |

| Why is it bad that people share it amongst each other? That just shows that people actually LIKE the track, and you should be happy for that. Don't care about money, cuz you must have big reputation in this business in order to make anything at all. And how do you get that reputation? By getting noticed by as many people as possible, and therefore spreading of a track is excellent promotion for you as an artist. |

It's not about caring if your track gets leaked, it's whether you want to get it signed or not. Labels won't be very interested in tracks that are already leaked in full.
Personally, I don't mind my tracks being on P2P (etc), so long as it's after the release, not before. |
