btw, I'm not flamming here, I've never been to NY but I've been to a lot of big cities and can't see NY being that different. I don't understand why we're supposed to be impressed that someone can handle living in NY |

NYC eats people up and spits them out, just ask any executive, in fact if you put that you have worked in NY on your resume, you will defintely get more consideration (outside of NY, including in foreign countries). It is widely accepted that NYC is one of the more stressful cities to live in, when you see people on the weekend rushing like madmen to get their drycleaning and getting stressed about it, that pretty much sums it up, you would have to live and work here to truly understand, the amount and quality of work that is expected is much greater than even the NY suburbs. It might be that there are so many people concentrated in one place that employers tend to set standards which are elevated compared to other cities, but there is more to it, including the infamous NY attitude and facade. This facade is a protection mechanism and usually makes it really hard to really get to know someone. |

| just as an example, if i came to work in canada, lets say toronto, in the financial district, and i have work experience in NYC, i would definitely get more attention then someone from miami florida. we could get into a discussion as to whether this distinction is valid, but it doesn't matter, cause its all about appearances. |

buddy, you obviously have not been to miami in a long time. go to south beach for a weekend and A. see how much money you spend and B. see what kind of friends you meet, if you meet any at all.
miami is getting ridiculous. it's WAY more expensive to live down here now and it's the country's newest hot spot. it's fake as hell down here too. everyone has their head up their ass. people down here take themselves way too seriously. i wouldn't say that it has that same stressful vibe that new yorkers have though...it's different down here. it's very loungey and trendy and everyone is just way too sexy for their shirt. :rolleyes:
oh yea and i spent a weekend in NYC and yea, it's a big ass city with lots of noise and people but i felt right at home:) i love the energy...i agree though about it being a tough city to survive in. i was checking out apts. in NYC the other day and jesus...i would definitely have to live in jersey or something unless i was making like 250k + a year...and even then, i doubt i'd be more than comfortable. but trust me when i say that miami is not too far behind. the real estate market is f'n ridiculous now. you can't even find a little crappy 2 bedroom house for less than 350k. so yea, it's not NYC, but don't make the mistake of thinking everyone is so nice down here in miami and it's so cheap...things are changing. |

I was actually there in april and my best friend is in real estate down there. While the housing market is booming down there, most people are buying secong homes or apts, usually to make a quick buck. Once the housing market cools off, which seems to be happening as we speak, miami is gonna be in for some trouble. Miami was one of the places alan greenspan indicated was anomalously high, as well as las vegas. 350 k for a 2 bedroon isn't so bad, it would take at least 500k to get a decent house here, 350k u may get some place in the bronx or something. The average apt. in NYC is 1 million. So while miami may very well be hip and stylish, as far as the job market and salaries are concerned there is not comparison. Fact of the matter is most people atke their NY salary and buy an apt in miami to chill... |
