Hmmm trance in 2010...
Ok here are my thoughts/rants.
in 2010, we'll be asking the exact same question, and all thinking the same thing, and if it's not us, it'll be someone else, and the trance world will be in basically the same place it is now.
Why? Because of percentage.
There is only a certain % of people that 'GET' trance... this percentage has been tapped into years ago, and now it's rolling along through subsequent generations. More people might be going out listiening to music, but I'm pretty sure the % listening to the various styles coming under the basic umbrella's of house, trance, techno, electro? is the same. Same as rock, disco, etc etc
You cant change the %, (much) it's natures way of keeping the balance, (yeah it sounds like hippie talk, but do you catch my drift?)
No-one in the future will be as famous as the tiesto's and Armins playing trance. You may be popular like O'bir... and may be able to make a living from it if you work really hard AS three things...
3!!?? Yep first two are easy, Dj and producer....the 3rd...unfortunately is as a promoter, and it's not just promoting yourself...
I doubt if anyone will be famous from OZ, but you may be popular like chable etc.. Small popualation=small % compared to rest of worlds' %
The next batch of famous 'dj's' wil be famous for stuff that is totally new that hasn't even be discovered or played yet.
Nuff of rant.. ;-) |

Melbourne was the Trance captial of the world outside of Germany many m00ns ago... International DJs / Producers at that time LOVED to play here... We also had a plethora of talented producers... Check out the 'psy harmonics' label and you will see for yourself... These guys who produced here locally in the 'underground' scene... were well known in Europe, where Trance was evolving into an awesome genre...
12 years on, and we now have a new generation of talented producers writing some cool stuff. To say that it may be a difficult path for these talented producers to become well known across the globe is probably quite fair... The reason for that is theres waaaaaay too much competition, the scene isnt underground anymore... Its more about marketting and pushing your music to the right people at the right time than it is about how good your track is...
The other thing to mention is there are way too many copycats out there who are trying to emulate the "big names" sound, instead of trying to be creative and unique... Why would a label want to sign a unsigned producer who writes similar to Ferry Corsten when they can actually sign Ferrys music to their label? Less money? Maybe! But that sort of thing wont get you noticed by anyone, when theres another 50 million producers writing in a similar style sending their tracks to the same "big labels"...
The only way to work around this is for Australia to have a label that pushes a unique style of Trance... Or just a unique sound entirely. Not a label that pushes "copycat" style of music... Think of how the label Platipus came about... the sort of music they pushed in comparison to what everyone else was doing... Their SOUND was UNIQUE...
So to answer your question in order for australians to become well known overseas, they need to push music thats unique |

| Had a chat with ajs1 last night and i think we both came to the conclusion that some more Psy would be a big step forward. |

I dont know mang, psy is not a particularly accessible genre for those currently outside of edm.
It may be good a good thing for those already in the scene, but i think our problem lies not in what people already into edm are getting into; but raher getting new people into edm. |

imho the key to getting new people into trance comes from people who are already in trance and are knowledgeable in trance giving the newbies good stuff to listen to. Also the producers of today coming up with original sounding trance, instead of the same recycled basslines that seem to get produced today. Newbies will most likely get bored of it very quickly..
but really, who knows.. |

Ay soups! Today's trance is pretty meh... I'm living in the past which is the only reason I say I like trance!
And I indeed am converting my friends with my selection compilations (it's very romantic making compilation cd's ;) ) whereby I put on the old progressive/trance classics and they fall in love with the music and live in hope like me it will all get good again!
There was a reason 98-01 had superclubs of people adoring trance; the tracks were impossible not to like! |
