| nah, I think DJs had to be doing it way before Oakie. Not sure if we will ever find the answer to this though. |

That depends on if a cover is a remix. A cover is essentially another person or band's version of a song, which sounds alot like a remix to me. If so, the "remixes" have been around since at least the 50s, and probably earlier. I would agree with the person who said Grandmaster Flash pioneered the "modern" remix. Even if you're speaking from a solely EDM POV, I think the first remixes were well befor Oakenfold's prime.
Covers Project has a lot of information on covers, remixes, etc, as does Discogs |

i'd place the first remixes in jamaica, a generation before grandmaster flash, though they called em dubplates.
and treeboo, on your idea of what might constitute a remix, a kid learning to play the piano is a remixer, and that would also mean remixes have been around for centuries, not a measly 60 years :p |

| well i dont know when the first term remix was used ona label.. theres a difference between Covering a song and remixing it. Remixing involves sampling and reconstruction generally. A remix to be labled on a record would probably constitute the first "RE MIX" |

I agree. I almost brought up renaissance era reconstructions of musical masterpieces as potential remixes. My definition was indeed a little vague; I should have noted that any professional attempt at recreating anothers work is a remix. |

if you'll go further in depth you'll see that this leads you do calling every musical piece a remix... unless you impose more limits on the definition of a remix ;) |
