I agree paul, i feel edm wont really get into americas youth. you're right, we are image obsessed. Americans are very conservative when it comes to music. My brother, who is 18, detests trance music. he says its so ing "gay" and he hates it. Honestly i dont understand how you can call edm "gay" when he listens to 70s & 80s buttrock thats older then him, with his hands cocked like this all the time \M/ hes not a rocker, not a punk, but all americans for the most part, do not like hearing styles of music they havent heard before.
I agree with the homeboy mentality, it is rampent here. I see tons of kids driving around in their riced out hondas blasting hip-hop, and im like "dude ur white, the song ur 'bumping to' says ' white people' come on"
Plus, Since like you mentioned before Americans are image conscience, insecurity and whats "popular" at the time also dictates what people "like"
This is why EDM wont become mainstream....Americans are too conservative in musical styles, the common stereotype is that youth is too concerned what their friends will think of their new music cuz it means ur "gay" to like EDM, and Americas true club scene is nothing like Europes....everyones like "OMFGZ ITS TEH BLINK 182 CONCERT LOLZ, TIME TO GO HAVE FUN DOING NOTHING ROFLZ"

Lets not forget that huge companies like Tommy Hilfiger have forged their whole image on the "hip hop" identity which has become so huge in the US. If people are bombarded in the media and on the streets by brands, fashion and music based on young, african-american style that is seen as cool, then it is only natural that many of them will adopt that style and the music to go with it.
Check out this documentary that was aired in the Us about the "merchants of cool". Fascinating viewing IMO

i didn't claim to be right, all along i am saying that the way the media portrays american teenagers here is the way that i have explained. as i said, the americans i have met before aren't like this and I am probably as far from the truth about the place as you can get but i am only basing my opinions on what i see and hear about america. i was in florida once but i was only 11 so can't remember much except for the rollercoasters :D

Most teens in US (especially my college dorm neighbors) calls EDM (Trance to be specific) "TECHNO"....
And I think EDM should remain underground, while having an "door" (like famous DJ, Tiesto) for people to come in to clubs/raves and explore EDM themselves.
No kidding...thank God for Armin, PVD, Tiesto etc...I was able hook on to and love EDM instead of rap/r&B (which is MAJORLY overplayed here in the US).
It's kinda boring to hear "the , is Bananas B-A-N-A-N-A-S" every single day on the radio.... |
