When I was in highschool I did a research paper on this. Now it's been 9 years so I cannot recall all the details, however, I recall that the cost to execute one prisoner in the state of Florida (least expensive at the time) was roughly equivelent to housing a "dangerous offender" in Canada for 56 years. My study took into account the court costs, housing of prisoners, cost of execution equipment (per execution), and incidental expenses for each execution. |

^^^ I'd share those concerns...suspending civil liberties is indeed a serious measure...and I'm not sure the situation has come to that.
personally, I'd rather see "reasonable limitations" on certain Charter rights...namely where race is concerned. I have no problem with profiling if it's done in a very regulated and highly scrutinized manner.
When is this ing city going to acknowledge that this isn't just a "youth" or "gun" problem??? :whip:
this is a problem in SPECIFIC communities...communities made up of visible minorities. Look at who is shooting who...it's ALMOST ALWAYS a visible minority shooting/assaulting someone of their own or rival minority group.
IT IS NOT RACIST TO ACKNOWLEDGE THIS *FACT*.
I'm so ing sick of the PC bull here... the community leaders who cry racism and then blame the police when something like this happens...they do their own communities a huge disservice by seeking to lay blame instead of working to find solutions. |
STOP THE PRESSES!!!
We agree on something LOL |

^^^^^^^^its racist whenever a white guy has a comment that goes against the accepted politically correct line of thinking no matter how well educated his opinion is. Especially when he finds fault with the system, a particular group or an action.
However it is perfectly acceptable for everyone else to question these things on a daily basis. |

Wow I remember always feeling so safe everytime I walked down the streets of Toronto. I highly doubt I will think of t.o. as an unsafe place, but it does seem like the problem is getting worse up there......
just be thankful, you COULD live in New York...I swear I read the paper daily and like 5 people are killed each day by guns ALONE (minus stabbings, etc....) I always wonder what could possibly make people that damn angry to kill someone..... |

My solution to gun violence is simple. Caught with illegal possesion of a firearm, 10 yrs in prison. Convicted with murder using a firearm, life imprisonment. Real life imprisonment meaning once you're in there, only way you're coming out is when you're dead.
Will it deter gun crimes? Maybe. But at least I'd feel better knowing that ing up big time means offender pays.
As for the article, does this woman expect police to show up at every funeral when someone dies? Sounds like a grief stricken woman lashing out, trying to put a blame on someone. |

:D
as for "unsafe Toronto"...bull.
as long as these idiots keep killing each other (the odd stray-bullet notwithstanding), I feel as safe as I always have.
I'm not a minority gang member...I'm not a drug dealer...I don't run with punk kids who have to look over their shoulder forever for retaliation...so I really don't fear for my safety any less/more than usual.
having said that, I think the situation needs to be corrected. |

Wow, never thought I'd hear that coming from you!
Well said!
I still think that *most* of the blame lies squarely with the judges who let these people off or give them pathetic 1-2 year sentences, and the immigration officers who keep letting them back in after they've been deported 3 times already. A huge percentage of these criminals are repeat offenders.
What we need are mandatory sentences. 25 to life, no deportation. It worked in New York City, and it worked for the Jane/Finch area in Toronto. |

Doesn't California have something like that? 3 strikes and you're in the slammer for long time? |

Probably.
The problem is that the police ARE catching these criminals. They're just not getting punished! |

essentially complete agreement between jayx1, diginut and myself.
this is proof that we CAN all get along, LOL.
I have seriously low tolerance for repeat offenders too. I'm all for 2nd chances...hell, even 3rd chances for non-violent crime...and allocating resources to providing options for people to change their ways...be it job training, education, leisure (for kids/teens), whatever...but hearing about some repeat violent criminal who initially got off with a slap on the wrist and nothing else makes me sick. |
