I don't really spend a lot on the studio though (if you can call it a studio)... I've just got Emulator X and a MIDI keyboard. To be honest I don't really get a hard-on for gear - all that's on my list are those studio monitors, one of the MOTU firewire boxes, and a control surface (also Mackie), in that order. I'm going on 8 months now "seriously" producing and just starting to feel the limitations of the equipment I've got. I wouldn't really put a hard limit on the equipment I buy, but again that's probably because what I spend is essentially peanuts; if I were addicted to gear then I might think more about budgeting.
Are you making money from your tunes, or doing recording/mastering for other people, or both? And do you do it during off-hours or have you essentially made it your full-time job? |
Currently i'm composing the music for a documentary. Its a pretty decent paying job as i'm still fairly new to the 'making money' world of music production, once i build a reputation, i'd be making a lot more for the same project, but i'm still obtaining the 'trust' barrier with producers.
I'm still a full time student finishing my 4th year of a Bachelor of Music.
producing music is going to be my secondary career. so my goal is to a create substantial side income off it, but i'm not getting to high expectations as its a tough industry. but unlike many ppl on the form, i'm not only a EDM musician, and i don't look at my career as getting signed to labels, although who knows, maybe i'll try down the road, but documentaries/tv/commercial and hopefully even budging into the film industry will be more down my line.
so thats me in a nutshell :D |

As someone said, don't make compromises. BUT! If you're looking into monitors in the 300-500£ price range you can't expect them to be perfect, every one rants about their monitors but only you can decide which one's the best for you...
Take your absolute favorite CD/song (which you have listened to for more than a couple of times) with you to the store and play it through diffrent monitors. Or maybe your so lucky you can play with a DAW in the store...
The important thing here is that you know what you're after, not what others think... |

I know how both sound, I have gone to a store and listened although it was a while ago. But my ears arent as experienced with monitors like some of the members here. I think they are both very good sounding speakers, but I need something alittle more technical than 'yea, they sound good', because although I will initially be using them to DJ with (which it doesnt matter as long as they are loud), I do intend to use the speakers for production. :)
But as I said, Ive made the decision to go with the Events, they are clearly the superior speaker, as I expected. :p |

The size of the woofer simply factors into the frequency response at the bass end. The only parameters you really need to pay attention to with a monitor are:
- Frequency response (the flatter the better)
- Frequency range (flat frequency response won't help you if the low cutoff is at 80 Hz, or the high cutoff is at 20 kHz)
- Power handling (if you plan on playing at really high volume - 50 W RMS is plenty enough for just about everyone)
- Physical dimensions (just make sure it actually fits in your studio)
That's about it.

Good stuff, so you're actually doing something with that music degree. ;) One of the main reasons I didn't go into music as a program was because I didn't think it would make me an income... of course, at that point I hadn't even thought about production, but I probably would have made the same decision anyway.
You really do have to make a name for yourself before you can get the big bad projects. Most people do that by undercutting everybody else in the beginning (even if it means losing money) and putting everything they have into it. Then when people know who you are, you can ease off a little bit.
I'm not speaking from experience as a studio tech or producer but it's the same concept as any self-employed/contracting business. Anyway, good luck! You're already getting some projects, so it sounds like you're well on your way. |

The general rule is the bigger the driver the lower the frequencies, but it also depends on the type of material used for the cone eg: if it's paper, kevlar or some sort of poly-fibre. The driver size & shape will effect the way the wave is dispersed (narrow or wide) & how loud it will be; but amplification will also factor in how loud the driver can go. If two models are the same cone material, profile & have the same amplification you would expect the larger cone to be a bit louder in volume. It also depends on your room size, it is no use buying a massive long throw speaker for a small room as you will not get a 'sweet spot' centre image & you'll notice too much low range. The work area is really important when considering a monitor. A near field monitor will not sound as full as a bigger midfield monitor in a large accustic space. Get a monitor that suits your work space dimensions & then you'll need to optimise the speaker positions for the room layout; you will need to do a bit of reseach on this.
You may not be able to notice much difference between 6" & 8" of the same model monitor. If anything there will be subtle differences. Eg: The 6" may appear tighter while the 8" is deeper. The 6" may drive higher frequencies alot stonger but the 8" may have a greater range of frequencies. It all depends on the model. |

i am also in a lookout for monitors. So I went down to a local music store with some favorite songs and tested some active monitors, all around $400/pair.
I tested the following:
Behringer Truths B2031A, M-audio BX5A, KRK RP5 Rockit, Yamaha MSP3,
Yamaha's and Maudios both had too much colorisation. KRK had very low highs. Behringer actually sounded the best. But thats just my findings.
I still want to try Events and Alesis. |
