I will eventually get them if things work out. If not I might get the 20/20bas monitors, which are also hella sweet.

actually, don't the hr824's have a flatter response?

Its impossible to tell which one is flatter comparing those 2 pictures, Im sure if you blew up the Mackie one it would look like the Event one. The point is, neither of them go over or under 5. It looks like both of them dont even go over or under 2.5. :)

The Mackie HR824 is much flatter, I pointed that out earlier.

But it's also about twice the price, and if you don't have tons of cash to spend than the Event monitors are certainly "good enough", I can't imagine having any trouble producing on those.

Good stuff, so you're actually doing something with that music degree. ;) One of the main reasons I didn't go into music as a program was because I didn't think it would make me an income... of course, at that point I hadn't even thought about production, but I probably would have made the same decision anyway.

You really do have to make a name for yourself before you can get the big bad projects. Most people do that by undercutting everybody else in the beginning (even if it means losing money) and putting everything they have into it. Then when people know who you are, you can ease off a little bit.

I'm not speaking from experience as a studio tech or producer but it's the same concept as any self-employed/contracting business. Anyway, good luck! You're already getting some projects, so it sounds like you're well on your way.

thanks, yeh its definately exciting to finally be getting 'out there' i'm not a gear junkie either. My main three "hardware" components are my Event TR-6, Presonus Firebox and M-Audio Radium 61 (well and obviously the computer, but thats a given). Theres some good gear around...but i've really favouring software, and the one benifit, is it keeps your work space neat. If you feel your stuff is good enough to get signed to a label, you should give it a shot! you put all that work into making your song, might as well get some exposure!

Control Board:
Midas Venice 240 - $4,100

 That is one hell of a mixer. Why get this beast?

You may not need this mixer if you are going to get the MOTU 896HD. & then again, you may not even need the MOTU if you are going to get the RME Audio HDSP9632 sound card. The RME card is great for a home studio as you can add 6 inputs/outputs; which covers your headphone, a pair of monitors & a microphone. Then the synth & midi controller would be hooked up via usb2.

Are you planning on hitting the road & going on tour? This stuff is overkill for a home studio; so many inputs. You could save some money by getting a smaller mixer.

Great synth selection btw.

See I dont totally understand all the the things behind all the production equipment, I just know what is out there, and what some studios have. So I figured a control board, a couple synths, sound card and interface. Past the control board, synth and sound card, I really have no idea what most of the stuff out there does. :p

And why do I want that mixer? Because it is a beast, I know if I get that I will probably never have to replace it or upgrade. :)

I have another question, for those of you who have used the Virus, how big a difference is there between the KC and the TI? Because if the difference isnt significant, Id rather just get a second hand or new KC since it would save me a load of cash. :)

Flat frequency response on a chart is fine and dandy - but does it contribute to producing well-balanced music, not at all.

Depending on what you want to spend, you will have to make a few choices - the size of the woofers (5", 6", or 8"), the amplification power (go powered of course), and the tweeter material (metal vs silk vs "other").

I will tell you right now if you compare the $1,000 Mackies against the $1,000 Dynaudios or the $1,100 Event SP6, you will think the Mackies are some relics from the 1960's (the Dynaudios and Events are that good). A little more $ will get you a pair of low end ADAMS, which sound different than other speakers due to the ribbon tweeter (like Magnepan home speakers). There are other choices like Tannoys and Genelecs, but those brands don't offer a lot of value at the $1,000 price point - their high end offerings are a different story.

I run the old M-Audio Studiophile 8" speakers (precursors to the SP8) - good, but not up to 2005 standards.

^ i think thats false info telling to go with powered.

i personally went powered since i did not want to invest in an amp, but non-powered are usually a bit cheaper, because of that factor, and if u have a proper amp can sound no less accurate then powered.
