Yup i get them pretty regularly. Have you seen a doctor/counsellor for these? I got some prescription meds to calm me down for the extreme ones but generally try to avoid taking them as they are the equivalent to xanax and from what i hear, highly addictive.
If you don't have any of those or if the attack isn't to the point where you feel like you're going to pass out, then just try some deep breathing, lay down preferably. Remember that panic attacks are all in your head. No one has ever died from them and no one has ever suffered anything beyond what was happening to them during the attack.
I found the best way to stay one step ahead of the attacks is to read as much about them as i can. A panic attack is a chemical reaction in your brain which causes you to react the same way you would in a situation of extreme fear (like your car breaking down at a railroad crossing when a train is 50 feet away). Although no one really knows what causes them, you can totally manage it with the proper tools :)
Try listening to some soothing music and don't focus on the attack itself. The more you tell yourself ", i'm having an attack", the worse it'll become. As i said before, lay down, read a book, anything to take the focus away from it. Deep breathing through your mouth works really great for me. Also make sure you're not on any type of stimulant for the next few hours. No caffeine, or fast sugars etc.
You'll feel better in no time! I still suggest you see someone about them though, there might be an underlying reason as to why you experience them.
Good luck! :D |

Weed can actually cause panic attacks haha ...i get them because i used to do a good amount of weed/other substances, and know for a fact that if you're chronic abuser of cannabis, and u go cold turkey after a few years, u get panic attacks. Some people just get then naturally, others differently, I know I have it and it ing sucks ..the other week i was in my car in a parking lot and didnt wanna leave because I was afraid something bad was gonna happen to me if I left it. :wtf: |

| I had one really bad panic attack and it was the main reason behind my drastic cutback in substance use. I feel for anyone who has to deal with them on a regular basis. |

hey jackson
alot of times, analyzation and awareness of the situation as a whole helps, infact it can really help prevent. As you know, when you go into one, all reality kind of fades and you're simply not thinking rationally. It just keeps building up.
I think once you are aware of the steps you're in, you can help prevent/reduce the level of the next. Anxiety attacks are real, theyres no "its all in your head" (no pun) about it. Its chemical. But just like how a speaker can give you a headache, or standing out in the winter can give you a cold, wrong thinking can send you off in an attack. They're ALL usually reactions to conditions. Not always, but most of the time.
analyze the level you're in. First you got the anxious as level, then you got the first "wave", then the second wave, the "oh " wave, then the "wtf im dying" wave. Its one giant domino effect. Sure, hearing your heart going 100mph and feeling like the world spinning isnt comforting, it only makes things build up, but, just realize, its nothing more than what it is. Its a miserable few minutes, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
IMO for many, the medicine approach can develop an extreme dependancy, and disallows the patient to ever actually "fight" the battle. Ofcourse, if it helps, and its not unhealthy, why not. I wouldnt suggest resorting to escape methods though, IE weed or alchohol, or other street drugs. Thats just asking for another problem, and is 90% of the reason people go into substance abuse, (escape from something else).
Just like any other health condition, awareness is VERY powerful. |

Theres a difference between panic attacks and attacks that you experience from substance abuse.
I get panic attacks probably once a month when Im at school. I usually have no idea what to do, its impossible to stop. Lying down in my bed and crying usually helped me though. Hyperventilating was usually a different story, Id have to get someone else to calm me down if it got that bad. Try and find something that always makes you feel better (not any kind of drugs or alcohol, thats only going to make it worse), something that reminds you of times when things were great, and just chill out with that for a while. |

try it on a daily basis, for 11 years mate. it's one of those things most people don't understand & a lot don't want to, but thankfully I know a few people from here who've not held it against me |

| ^ word ...i was in the same boat, but only for half that time. I totally quit, and didnt smoke for a year, let me tell u that was the hardest time ive had to deal with. I built myself this little world while i was doing stuff, like what i perceived to be reality, and then when I went sober, I didnt know what was what hah...lost as hell, and public places like shopping, being in places with alot of peopel such as grocery lines became unbarable. |
