well its certainly not the best solution even in those circumstances. I mean what happens if one time smoking weed only exacerbates the panic attack and u suddenly start to get really paranoid? Chances may well be that this wont happen but would u really want to take the risk? End of the day using any form of escapism to deal with a serious problem doesn't make the problem go away.

Don't feel like reading all the inbetween stuff, but I have panic attacks, too every now and again.

Have you thought about seeing a trained psychotherapist? They can teach you coping skills so that you don't need to take medication (works for most people). You always have yourself. You don't always have a bottle of medication w/ you, and even if you did, panic attacks aren't considerate like that. They'll wait until you least expect it.

Some things that helped:

1) Learn how to deep breathe (from the abdomen). You should aim for 6 deep breaths per minute.
2) Learn progressive relaxation. It's an exercise where you progressively tense up all your muscles, and then progressively relax them.
3) Learn cognitive behavioral therapy. Learn a new way to think so that you don't have panic attacks. It's not normal to think ALL the time. It's not normal to think about thinking very often. When we do this, we get filled with anxiety. When we are filled with anxiety, we don't breathe right, which can cause a panic attack.
4) Learn imagery relaxation. Close your eyes. Think about yourself and the closest encounter you ever had with paradise. Breathe deeply.

Medication is only a temp fix unless you want to be on it for life. Learn some coping skills too. If you are really fed up, get on the meds and see a psychologist. Ask strictly for cognitive behavioral therapy.

There is ever present evidence that smoking small amounts of marijuana serve as a good antidepressant/antianxiety drug. You must smoke indica forms of marijuana (the chill couchlock kind, not the speedy-awake kind). In the US, in the medical marijuana legal states, you can often get a rec for marijuana for anxiety relief.

Let's try and do away with stigmas. Let's try not to believe all the stuff you've heard from the US Federal government over the years, most of it is being proven wrong. Marijuana is safer on the human body than most of the antidepressants on the market. They are liver toxins, marijuana isn't toxic on the body. It may, at worst, irritate the sinuses/lungs. Check pubmed if you don't believe me. Cannabis can even cause cancer cells to die. No joke. It's good stuff. It might make you feel slow/stupid for a couple of days while you're on it, but I've noticed no ill effects. It's helping me get through college (I have IBS :().

As much as I think that cannabis does have some medicinal properties, saying that smoking for ur panic attacks and that it helps u cope with them is like saying well my life is miserable so im going to cure myself by smoking some herb. All you're doing is covering up the problem with a substance, if you stop smoking that substance which just happens to be weed...it will come back and quiet possibly in a worst form than before. Now I'm not against pot, I used to toke 24/7 and still love to once in a while , but lets be real.

there's a time and a place for most things, but we are also more serious at times, I guess you've not seen much of that but think before you unleash your bull in every single thread.

Do you also look down on Prozac / Zoloft / Paxil usage? They all cover the problem. If you aren't getting psychotherapy while seeking treatment for panic attacks, whatever your "medication" may be, you're going to relapse.

I think Mary Jane works great, but then again, I also got help for my panic problem as well and learned Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Also, buddhism helps, fyi.

I've been on those buddeh ...and precriptions are awful, i almost think that some prescriptions are as bad as crack. ONe of my old highschool buddies killed himself because he couldnt take prozac anymore, it drove him into suicide, he isnt the first case either. I've been on zoloft, do u know how ed up that drug is? Take it for a few weeks then get back to me.

Woah, buddy, take a step back...that was quite hostile!
I've been on prozac, effexor, amytriptiline and seroxat (paxil). Seroxat was the worst, tried to kill myself many times, would sit on a bridge or go to the traintracks...anyway, others have had worse experiences.

Angst, i wanna thank you so much for chattin to me on MSN earlier about CBT. It was so helpful, i've got it all set u ready. If ur ever in the uk, i owe u a drink!

Dude, I took Paxil for a few months and wanted to kill myself. The withdrawals caused maaaaaad puking and dry heaves. Then I took zoloft for a year. Turned me into a zombie and made me suicidal. Then I took prozac. Prozac worked out ok. You seem to be missing an idea of existentialism that's essential with people's medical problems: What work(s/ed) for you, may not WORK for someone else; What worked for someone else may or may not work for you.

The pills helped me plow through my CBT and psychotherapy. If I had to do it again, I would have never taken the Paxil, and I would have thought twice about the Zoloft. The problem w/ the newer SSRIs (excluding Prozac) is their extremely short half-life (<28 hours). Which means that if you accidentally forget to take your medication, you go bananas real quick. It also means when you're stopping your meds, that your body craves the drug at 28 hours and can make you sick. Prozac has a half-life of near 5 days, which means your body will naturally ween off of it. It's not necessary to taper prozac.

I'm sorry about your friend, though. But don't poo-poo the pills, they work for a whole lot of people.

Exactly, especially with Paxil, if i missed a dose by 4-6 hours my mood would swing and i'd crave the drug. I cant believe GSK can put a drug out there that controversial...:(
