Oh yeah you guys are right. What was I thinking, taking the opinion of someone with a PhD and years and years of experience in this field not to mention extensive research on the topic over the opinions of a couple of guys on the TA forums.

Boy do I feel stooopit!

LMAO story of my life..

in other news, I spoke with work today (in London, UK) and they were commenting on how great the new changes are. hah Pure alcoholics... that city is by far the most hardcore city in the world. I don't give a what anyone says, no one is even in the same league (in terms of substance abuse) as London.

Well, I'm sure you can find like 10 ppl with a PhD that supports privatization, for every 1 that is against it.

We are not talking about privitization in general. We are talking about privitization of LCBO.

I know. My comment is still valid though. Out of an economic perspective (which you were argueing), the LCBO monopoly doesn't make a whole lot sense in any other way than it is a cash cow for the Ontario government. Hence most ppl in the field would be in favor of privatizing it (donno about the ratio though but I'm sure it's rather overwelming anyway).

Really, using your logic (and essentially his) it would make sense to monopolize grocery stoes as well. Wanna do that too?

This is why at our duty free stores with taxes removed, prices are STILL higher than other countries for the same products produced in the same factories. Its because we do not have competition here.

X-inefficiencies are not seen just because there is a monopoly or near monopoly. And I thought you were a lot smarter than to argue from "surely".

Yeah it's a cash cow. Let's privitize it and then what? You want to pay higher taxes? Because that's whats going to happen when Ontario 's LCBO profits are gone. That, or less funding for the province.

And grocery stores are not the same as liquor stores.

political influence can also affect how a PHD and a non PHD think. Just because he says it doesnt mean its true. And likewise.

so the sole argument for keeping it government controlled is loss of revenue to the government? Thats a scary thought.

Some countries control gasoline too. That means there is no shell, BP or Esso, just the state owned gas station. They make a fortune for the country and charge a fortune to the customer. I think we should adopt that strategy too!

Well like it or not, the government needs to get its money from somewhere if it wants to finance things like healthcare and education. When NAFTA came into power, the Canadian government's sales tax in the merchendising sector became illegal, so the government of Canada instituted the GST. Things like that are ugly, but necessary if we are to continue having what we have.

The government will still tax the hell out of booze with or without the LCBO. So the losses wouldnt be as big as the LCBO unions claim. Whenever they run their numbers they forget to deduct the tax portion of those "profits".

artificial income generation is not a good idea either way. Let the private sector bring down the prices and offer more choice. I cannot support a communist style state run monopoly.

So why not monopolize grocery stores and gas stations as well? Clearly that has many benefits!

- The government would get a load of money
- Since it's only one actor, they would get better deals
etc

Clearly you could monopolize any essential sector and make it a government cash cow. But guess you are not in favor of that? Perhaps not because thats communism and it doesnt make sense with such policies in a market economy!

Besides, you do realise that if you privatize LCBO the profit made from liquir stores will end up in taxes and private consumption which will further stimulate the economy. So it's not like the profits that would otherwise end up in the government would now only be wasted on nothing, it will help the economy of the country to grow.
