| I use Windows XP Media Center Edition 05, I think its great, nothing too special about it though except for the enhanced multimedia features. |

XP Home is fine for a standalone music system if you don't need or have a clue about network security and multiple user systems where XP Pro is more appropriate. I think some people here are just proud of using an OS with Pro in it's name as opposed to Home :tongue3
Just keep in mind though that some software will only run under XP Pro. |

thanks for all the help everyone.
Bedlam-UK, which software will only run on pro?
It looks like I will need to get pro, because I may need to use another computer through FXteleport... Would you all recommend another computer with FXteleport? or would you go for the dual processor?
I see that pro offers "Remote Desktop" unlike the home edition. Do any of you use Remote Desktop to collaborate with another producer? |

Dual-processor machines are better suited for server applications than single-user applications. A dual-processor machine needs software which is highly multi-threaded to take advantage of both CPU's.
In any case, look for a place online that sells an OEM copy of XP Pro. You can get it for around $100 US.

Very true, except Home doesn't support dual processors. Therefore if anyones planning to buy a juicy dual processor daw, your gonna need pro or else half your processing power will be sitting idle. |

You are probably right ;)
But it's probably overkill for someone who's trying to figure out which version of Windows XP to buy :)

Audio-wise I don't know off the top of my head. Mostly networking type software and multi-processor type software. I was just suggesting that is somthing to think about.
All XP Home software will run on XP Pro but NOT all XP Pro software will run on XP Home......
If you think the price difference between Pro and Home is not much of a problem for you then Pro is the OS to go for. |

windows 95 was so much worse though :( i never got a blue screen of death on windows ME. i got too many of those on windows 95. not to mention the number of viruses that specifically targeted it. eugh. windows Me and 2000 got off lightly in that department. |

What software? Never heard of such a thing unless you are trying to run some Windows server SW or that sort of thing. The differences are almost all nil, but apparantly Microsoft has suckered y'all into spending the extra money so you could have the "Pro" name :)
