Audio-wise I don't know off the top of my head. Mostly networking type software and multi-processor type software. I was just suggesting that is somthing to think about.
All XP Home software will run on XP Pro but NOT all XP Pro software will run on XP Home......
If you think the price difference between Pro and Home is not much of a problem for you then Pro is the OS to go for. |
Maybe I should rephrase it.......Some software "Features" may require Windows XP Pro. :p |

I use Cubase SX3 and know that it can support this but never tried it. Have you or anyone else used Cubase SX3 with a dual processor?
Does it make a big difference?
Should I just invest in more ram instead?
A large part of my work is also done in FLstudio though, which does not support dual processing...
Ryan0751, what's a OEM copy? |

Make sure you have enough RAM and you'll be fine. A dual-processor machine will be faster than you need, you probably won't even begin to touch a single-processor machine.
OEM = Other Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM copy of windows would be the version that usually comes bundled with a system (instead of a retail box). Online merchants often sell the OEM copy at a cheap price. Try going to froogle.com and searching for oem windows xp.

If you want to use dual-processors you gonna have to buy a new motherboard too, as well as the processors...alot of cash....
You would be better off sticking with wot you got and buying more ram.... :tongue3
If you are asking all these questions because you are thinking of running alot of VST plugins then why don't you buy a hardware dsp audio card (UAD-1 or Powercore) ???
I have a powercore and I run all my effects through that, my cpu (2.4Ghz) rarely goes over 30% in Cubase.
A New card has just been released (I got the old Powercore Element which you can pickup on ebay for about £200 or less)
Go check it out:
PowerCore
IT'S £799 !!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I'm seriously thinking of that too. Why did you choose powercore over UAD-1? Also, I'm thinking of the option of Receptor.

I'm using large orchestral sample instruments along with high-end VSTis. That's why I'm worried about going over the CPU limit which may require a dual-processor. Do you use a lot of sampled sounds streaming off your hard drive? if you do, how do you have your system set up for this?
I must have an OEM version from dell then. I already have windows xp pro through dell. Do you think I would be able to use it on this new computer? Would there be network problems between the two computers using the same dell windows os?
Would an OEM version lack any specifications that a regular version would have? Or would it add anything that couldn't be turned off? I think dell's version came with their anoying help pop-up window. |

They are identical, except the retail version just costs alot more(you are only supposed to be able to get the OEM version with hardware, but I just got it at a store that let me buy it as long as I purchased a hard drive screw). Dell's software must have come on an additional disk. I know it did w/ my laptop(an OEM windows XP install disc and a Dell SW disc).
Typically you are supposed to remove the OS from one computer when you use it elsewhere, but I am not sure if it works to have both on the same LAN. |

Are they Windows messenger pop-ups(The little grey boxes that pop up as a result of the "net send" command) or IE/Mozilla/whatever browser you use pop-ups? If they are Windows messenger popups turn off the messenger service under Administrative Tools->services.
If you aren't using Firefox or something other than IE I would suggest it highly, as your browser will get hacked.
Not all spyware removal tools get eveything though, but I haven't had problems with spyware since I switched to Firefox. |

I didn't choose it over UAD-1, I would have probably bought a UAD-1 if I hadn't been offered the powercore for a silly price (£180).
The extra plugins are expensive but the default ones that come bundled with it are far than enough for my needs. The Access Virus synth plugin is amazing !!! And it only uses 25% of the cards resources.
the powercore has 4 dsp chips, which is as much processing power as 3Ghz CPU but with the added dsp boosters) :tongue3 |

im running internet explorer.
They are off white boxes that come from the quick launce bar( from a red circle with a x in it ), with a attention sign next to them saying:
"windows has detected spyware infection. it is recomended to use special antispyware software tools to prevent data loss". |

I would suggest downloading and running some sort of free spyware removal tool like Lavasoft Adaware or spybot search and destroy then go download Mozilla Firefox and stop using Internet Explorer.
If you really want to keep your music production PC clean from spyware keep it offline and use a different PC to browse the internet. Its less distracting as well. |
