One of the things I love most about trainning in BJJ is that it teaches you to be able to relax and think under stressful situations while fighting. 'If'I can get someone into a grappling position I can then take my time to breath and think of the next logical approach while keeping myself relatively safe. This is especially the case when going up against people with no grappling experience. Under most senario's I've encountered between two street fights and bouncing at a pretty rowdy bar for a year and a bit, being a fit 6'2" and 195 with significant grappling and MMA experience, there isn't much that I can't work through as long as it's bare knucle and no guns are involved (which I know isn't always a given). |
You're lucky that you can afford to take a moment to think about your moves in a fight situation.
Me being 5'7" 135lbs soaking wet, I know that I'm pretty much screwed if I get taken down by a bigger, stronger guy. So for me, once the first punch or kick is thrown, a lot of it is muscle memory situation where I'd react or initiate depending on what the guy is doing, because I don't have the luxury to think about my moves.
Luckily I've never been in a real fight, only few times in a sparring :)

Knifes while I would always try to avoid all together, I do know the strategic places where I can take a cut if need be to then get closer to remove the blade. obviously its next to impossible to train properly for knife situations but given what we can do I feel about as ready as I could be. |
I'd run if I can if a weapon of any sort comes out, if possible.

I used to have this awesome training partner two years ago who would be more than willing to go punch for punch with me and we would put in extra hours at Laurier on the mats as the Canadian open got closer. We used to get the best looks as we would go from stand up striking to grappling and beating the sh*t out of each other. It still brings a smile to my face. :) You know you're sick when getting beaten to a pulp brings a smile to your face. Explaining the brusing on my neck to my GF was always fun too. |
You got problems, mate. ;)
Wish I was still doing martial arts of some sort. :( |

Yeah but it takes up a crap load of my time. I'm currently trainning 7 times a week one week when I'm in town and then 5 times a week the second week. (2 week rotating trainning shedule)
the busy week shedule looks like:
Monday: BJJ for 2 hours, 1.5 hours in the gym after
Tuesday: Chitro and Shadowkan Karate for 1.5 hours
Wedneday: same as Monday
Thursday: same as Tueday
Friday: Day Off
Sat: Same as Tuesday + 1 hour Japanese Jiu-Jitsu
Sun: 1.5 hours competition practice then 5km run, then 1 hour in the weight room
Other week shedule essentially just cancels two practices.
7 weeks to go before I can relax. And then I'm taking 4-5 months off. :)
(well by time off I mean only trainning a bit on my own 1-2 times a week)
Edit: I took out a couple extra practices, bc to be honest what I'm told to do and what I actually end up doing often differ. Above is currently what I've been closed to sticking to for the last 3 months. |

| i dont train(organised) but i do have an extensive background in wrestling. My punching bag is my best friend(speed bag too).I have no interest in fighting as my mislead youth has shown me the ills of violent activities(although i faking love to watch it).If you ever make it to Mtl Nusty i would love to spar just for the hell of it.We are similar weights.(im 6' 4' 200lbs)....all this talk is making me put a new mouthpiece in boiling water.I'm contemplating joining a Muay Tai class that a buddy of mine runs, but my dedication is nowhere near yours. And evil....i have worked security before and the best bouncer i have ever seen was only 5' 6'.It was amazing to see this guy totally neutralize much taller and bigger guys out of what can be called a clench position.Size is good, technique is better. |

yup. scariest guy I know is 5'9".
Second scariest guy I know is 6'7" and 290!
As for coming up to montreal, I'll definatly shoot you a PM the next time I'm in your neck of the woods. I mess around with my housemates all the time with full gear on but they are starting to get pretty sick of it and the guys at BJJ don't like getting hit and the guys at Karate don't like being taken down and grappled with. So the majority of the time I'm not allowed to train going back and forth. As a result I'm always looking for someone who wants mess around with MMA style fun, even if it's just taking it easy. :) |

TA fight night anyone? ;)
High school wrestling is pretty much the limit of any training that a lot of overacting hormone filled boys have too.

Oh I heartily agree with you. But physical size has its own advantage too, like I can't take a punch or a kick as good as a bigger guy.
One of the purpose of a bouncer is the intimidating factor IMO. Hiring a small guy kinda makes idiots think they might get away with trouble. |

True that's why most of them 'look' and act like jerks. If they acted all nice and buddy buddy with you then people would think they could get away with more. The last place I worked bouncing for in University used to hire these huge guys that were absoultly useless whenever anything happened. I guess their theory was if they were bigger then drunks wouldn't even attempt it as much... they failed to see the that drunks don't have that logic and think they can take on anyone. |

I agree evil...but the time i did get knocked out was by someone smaller than me....he hit me square in the jaw...bye bye knees, zzzzzzzzzz time.
I would like to think it was a sucker punch, but he just plain got me. |

IMO anyone hired to do security should take a basic course in fight management plus some basic takedowns. A lot of them handle these troubles very poorly just because they are not trained. |

Human jaw is not designed to take punches. (I read that somewhere):p |

deal.
normally when I go at it with friends I don't strike to the face, nuts or knees. besides that just basic rules of kindness, I don't do anything I couldn't take back in return... bc I know it will probably happen.
mainly just body shots and grappling. although if my gaurd is too low taking a light shot to the head is a good way of reminder for me. ;)
my trainning partner from 2 years ago was so well match with me that if one of us started laying in too hard to the other one, then we knew we were in for an ass kicking since it was bound to be returned in a few moments once the upper hand changed. |

honestly a bit of grappling can go a long way in security work.
I wouldn't have wanted to have had that job more than a day without it.
no gets seriously hurt and you can difuse the situation pretty fast when a guy goes unconsious from a choke while you drag him out the door, and then he comes to again within seconds although a bit out of it. Besides chokes (which are my personal favorite) wrist locks can be useful in a bar setting if you just need the guy to leave.
funniest time I had was a guy threatening to break my arm... I told him I trained in Jiu-jitsu and he probably wouldn't be successful. After he tried 3 times (unsucessfully) he grabbed a pool cue. I then told him I was also trained in bo-jitsu, the art of the 6 foot stick. He looked at me like I was a lier. So yeah the pool cue didn't work for him either as I took it away from him. then he just gave up and walked out on his own all pissed off. I never even had really lay a finger on him.:D |
