You were five minutes late and she wouldn't let you in on it? I would have made a scene, threatened to summon the dean of the colege, started causing a major disturbance. You pay to take those classes, and if you're only 5 minutes late to a final, that is no excuse to keep you from taking it. I would have emailed the professor, the dean, the head of thecollege, my advisor, in short, everyone to make sure I could take a retake.
Alot of university TAs (Teaching assistants) (im assuming this wasnt a professor, but even if it was, this applies), are on a power trip similar to cops and judges up for re-election. I would start emailing everyone now so you dont get stuck retaking... Yes it is your fault, but 5 minutes is nominal at best and the teacher seems to have not wanted a problem. Next time, throw papers off the teachers desk and cause a serious mess; be vocal and obnoxious until they give you the final or troop you out in the hall to talk and deal....usually they'll give you the final just to get you out of their hair... |

I tutor at my uni, and believe me - you behave like that you get laughed at when we're down the pub together. Tutors are more overworked and underpaid than they are 'powertripping', and causing extra hassle for the very people that are grading you does nobody any favours. |

A tutor is not a teaching assistant. A teaching assistant is someone who teaches a class so that a tenured professor doesnt have to do work. A tutor is someone who helps you learn the topic material because you're not doing well enough on your own.
TA's may be underpaid, but they also often receive free or discounted tuition for graduate school. If they don't like it, it's their fault for choosing that route. Surely, I respect good TAs, but one who denies you entrance to a final exam because ou were five minutes late is not only a poor TA but should be devoid of respect from friends and colleagues, as well as students. A good teacher (whether professor or graduate student) is one who facilitates learning and classroom performance, not one who impedes it.
Additionally, if you're going to ensure I fail because I am five minutes late for a final, you're going to pay. Go ahead and laugh at me at the pub but enjoy the hours of extra work I've created when I take one of your students tests or keys and tear it up, distract everyone from taking the test, or take several of your papers with me. You've more or less done the same for me when I've paid to take the classes, invested hours in learning the material and get no chance to prove my knowledge or receive a grade.
I've nothing against good teachers, but if Mario was only 5 minutes late for the final and his teacher wouldn't let him take it with no hint as to his future in the class, that is unacceptable, and the TA/prof deserved whatever ka muffins he got, if Mario were I. |

And to think i actually considered going to uni in the states...
Yeah I'm a teaching assistant (I run statistics seminars) and I agree that what he got was harsh - all I'm saying is that being nasty to the very people that are in control of your grades, your references etc, isn't really going to do you any favours in the long run.
But as Ian says, perhaps that's just the difference between UK and US. So it looks like I made the right decision staying in the UK :p |

Well, let's not go nuts. I think he should've established that he wasn't going to get to take the final first. But without taking the final he would certainly fail.
Imagine you spent 8 hours a week for 3 months on a project, and at the end, someone smashed it and threw it in the garbage, because they knew they could. You would certainly act irrationally and out of anger, which I think this situation warranted. A person on such a power trip (and I do think this is an acceptable use of the term) will often only react to such pro-action.
I'm not advocating this type of behavior, but the TA is ing with his future, and that is not acceptable. Good attempt at condescension towards the Untied States though. |
