whether or not it was tongue in cheek mate, it was meant to emphasise the differences between the 2 systems, a lot of things are totally different between the 2 of us, the education system is again the same as the law is too & so on, so while buddy has his points, est has an equally good one, due to the way things are different. |

| Maybe so, but referring to the UK as 'civilised' in comparison to the US is behavior consistent with that which you guys so stongly criticize us for displaying. Just a bit ironic is all. |

just 5 mins late WTF? :wtf:
a semesters worth of time in a class should never be compromised by being late just 5 mins... lame |

Well, let's not go nuts. I think he should've established that he wasn't going to get to take the final first. But without taking the final he would certainly fail.
Imagine you spent 8 hours a week for 3 months on a project, and at the end, someone smashed it and threw it in the garbage, because they knew they could. You would certainly act irrationally and out of anger, |
That actually did happen to me - my supervisor screwed my final year dissertation (though not intentionally). I just didn't see the point in getting angry or blaming it on him. My project was already ed, so I just did the best I could with it before handing it in.
I sneaked a look at my reference that he gave me when I applied for my PhD - absolutely golden (some of the things he said weren't even true). Would I have got that if I'd kicked up a fuss? Who knows... Bearing in mind that when getting a sought after job in the UK, references and contacts matter much more than grades.
I guess I'm just a genuinely nice person, and I stick to that. I tend to think that if I just do what I think is right, then everything will be fine. |

So you have no frame of reference here, Pariah Cleric. You're like a child who wanders into the middle of a movie and wants to know... |

He was saying earlier that the US is uncivilized, so I figured that's what you were talking about.
*shrug* whatever. |

Next time, throw papers off the teachers desk and cause a serious mess; be vocal and obnoxious until they give you the final or troop you out in the hall to talk and deal....usually they'll give you the final just to get you out of their hair... |
not a very smart idea:p. i might say i have very extensive experience in how to deal with instructors (and not a bad one - gpa of 3.99), and this is definitely one of the worst things you can do. even if this particular instructor will not teach any more classes, he/she will definitely tell the colleagues about you. |

You were five minutes late and she wouldn't let you in on it? I would have made a scene, threatened to summon the dean of the colege, started causing a major disturbance. You pay to take those classes, and if you're only 5 minutes late to a final, that is no excuse to keep you from taking it. I would have emailed the professor, the dean, the head of thecollege, my advisor, in short, everyone to make sure I could take a retake.
Alot of university TAs (Teaching assistants) (im assuming this wasnt a professor, but even if it was, this applies), are on a power trip similar to cops and judges up for re-election. I would start emailing everyone now so you dont get stuck retaking... Yes it is your fault, but 5 minutes is nominal at best and the teacher seems to have not wanted a problem. Next time, throw papers off the teachers desk and cause a serious mess; be vocal and obnoxious until they give you the final or troop you out in the hall to talk and deal....usually they'll give you the final just to get you out of their hair... | it was the professor... she has rules that we had to sign before taking the class... one of them is when a test/quiz is given if you are late, u can not take it :s i begged in teh email though |

a bit of advice: just do a normal talk with her. say that you are really sorry about this matter, explain that you think highly of her course and of her teaching methods, that you wanted to do your best, and that's why you were studying for her exam till 3a.m. and, frankly, overslept. while you understand that this is no excuse for a grown-up college student, you ask her for a chance to prove to her that you are excellently prepared to receive the highest grade for this course. just don't stray into any accusations or neglegent tone, and if she still doesn't allow you to retake the test, go to a higher official - vice president of academic affairs, for example. repeat the same speech (about the 3am, oversleeping, 5-minute late, etc., etc.) |

email is good for other cases, but in this one you need to communicate with her personally. |

No one to blame but yourself then :p
Good luck getting a retake.
I still stand by alot of what I said. A teacher worth their salt might approach you cautiously based off the information provided by their colleagues, but would respond civily if you treated them so. |
