| I actually had a very good upbringing. I still did alot of drugs. I even told my parents they had to try X. I understand what Slylee was trying to say since I have alot of friends that fall into that catagory or statistic or whatever u call it. I also have an ex gf that had a terrible upbringing by her parents & has never done a drug & it even tryed alcohol until she was 21. From her parents never being there & basically having no curfew since age 11, I think it taught her self reliance. She now makes great money with an awesome careeer. Is married & still stays away from drugs & even some alcohol for the most part. |

there is a relationship, its not perfect, but its there. You will find most people that had a 'rough' childhood do drugs.
But you'll also find people with 'normal' childhoods that do and don't do drugs, and also find people with bad upbringings that don't use any drugs....its not an exact science. |

I had a great childhood, my parents are still together, and I have an older brother who has been and still is one of my best friends.
I do what I do because I choose to and enjoy them.
I don't do them to escape.
I don't do them to fit in.
I just do them.
All of them.
Frequently. :D |

i still have yet to meet anyone who had a pretty "normal" upbringing who does drugs. it seems like pretty much everyone who does drugs on a weekend basis had a disfunctional childhood. and i don't mean that everyone who does drugs was tortured and beaten as a child...simply being a child of divorce would count.
i didn't exactly have the greatest childhood and i've been messing around with drugs since i was like 16.

I had a great upbringing...both moral and I did. I couldn't have asked for a better childhood. |

| Not in all cases, (most that I know of tho) others are cases where the person has too much money and doesnt know how to save it so they blow it all on drugs. |

Dunno if it's been said yet because I'm just not in the mood to read pages of posts today, but...
Every child has had "bad" things happen to them during their childhood, and "bad childhood" is going to be relative based on individual perception.
To answer the question, I had a great upbringing (parents are still together, I'm the oldest of 6 and love them all to death, no divorce/step-parents/etc.) And I haven't really touched drugs. Admittedly very curious though. |

Agreed. I've had a pretty messed up childhood, but I don't do (illegal)drugs except for experimentation. Sure I've got my problems, but drugs isn't one of them. I think it's just that people who internalize their emotions (like men are socially conditioned to) are more prone to substance abuse, but might just as well 'let it out' by a number of other different means. So yeah, it's definately a factor, but it's not the most important one by a long shot. I think it just has more to do with having a liberal personality, or the need to rebel. |
I agree with the internalizing of emotions!
My increased drug use started after the death of my father. My father raised me & my 2 sisters since I was 3. He passed away when I was 25. For the next 4 years, I delved into all kinds of drugs but mainly white. I used it to block out what I was feeling.
I cleaned up for awhile, but after my best friend passed away 3 years ago, I went back to using again but this time its Oxy. Been on it since.
I think that people use drugs for all kinds of reasons. Experimentation, friends using (peer pressure or group acceptence) or becuase you cannot deal with life so you use to escape.
Whatever you choose is fine for me. I do not look down on people who decide not to use or those that do.
In the end IT"S A CHOICE! |

I've never done drugs and I don't think I am ever. But never say never, it can happen the one's that hasn't done it (I wanted to avoid the best).
Anyways. From the people that I know, there hasn't really been a lot of cases with bad childhood (some ofcourse, but not all). Alot of people where I live follow something like a trend, better smoke and drink and like that, otherwise we're not in the gang, that e.. |

isn't it hereditary too? i have some alcoholism in my family and also, my dad was a MAJOR MAJOR pothead when he was in his early 20's. my mom said he was like the biggest loser ever and he had major temper problems so he smoked weed all the time to self medicate (why they divorced). but then he went to counselling and college and made a complete turnaround. if u met my dad you would never in a million years think that he ever even touched drugs. he's like mr. mellow nice guy who likes to cook and throw parties and wears docker khakis with polos...he's so clean cut now and he's very smart. it's weird to look at him and picture him like my mom tells me. i'm glad i was too young to see that side of him. but when i hear stories about him, i think, "wow, i'm a lot like him".
i'm a lot like my mom, but only in our mannerisms n stuff, and i'm sure a lot of it has to do with the fact that i'm around her all the time... but when it comes down to it, i'm like my dad's mini me of him when he was younger. |
