Thesis?

Are there any undergraduates here that are required to do undergraduate research or thesis?

I'm a meteorology major here, and our program here at Iowa State University is one of the few universities that require it in order for you to get your degree.

and sure enough, our major is one of the few on campus that require it as well [even all the engineers out there don't have to do a thesis].

just wondering if anyone else has had to do undergraduate research work at all.

we had to do it this semester, and then present it in front of our entire department and faculty and submit a typed version, ready for publication. now that i'm done with it [i presented on Monday and kicked ass on it], i can finally get back to this site more - as i have been cramming on it for the past month or so.

Do your theisis on the significants of 50% chance of rain in the forecast. If there is an equal chance of it raining/not raining one could flip a coin instead of listening to a metorologist tell you he's not sure if its going to rain. Btw how do they come up with these percentages and how valid are they? When they do exit voting polls or news related opinion polls the range of accuracy in percentage points is always given but metorologist just give you a number that you aren't allowed to question.

I don't have to do a thesis, but I'm pretty sure that's because i'm an Information Systems major. I do have to do this pretty extensive IS project at the end of the year. It's a requirement to graduate...so maybe it's the same thing?

Not an undergraduate thesis, but I am gonna have to do a thesis to get my masters, which I am going to dread! But I <3 political science.

Meteorology? Do a thesis on... ummm... global wamring, lol I bet your whole class is doing that one.

But seriously, do something cool that will eventually get published.

well, the research we had to do had to actually be scientific.... [i.e. read previously researched topics and be able to cite them in our final published copy].

as far as percentages go, this is what it means:

30% of rain = 30% of the viewing area will experience rain. [apprx].

so if it says 50% of [insert weather event here], then half of the viewing area [or range of viewing area] will experience said weather event.

Thanks thats interesting I never knew that. Although I'm not sure it changes the fundimental question because I then could still flip a coin to determine if I live in the 50% area that will receive the rainfall.

.

I actually did mine on Dust Storms in Southwest Asia. it was pretty slick because i got to work with some data from the Air Force Weather Agency, and the work that I did i was able to send back to them for thier use [and future use]. it was pretty neat because it gave me a little taste of what possible research i can do further down the road when i get into the AF.

I just finished writing my undergrad thesis in econ a couple of hours. Had to estimate what interest rates the Bundesbank would have set for 2001+ and how these compare to ECB rates.... so great to be finished.

Thank god I dont have a thesis defense. I think I'd shoot myself.

I thought that undergrad theses were pretty common.. most of the schools in my area gotta do it.. cornell has some i think as well.. middleburry, many more as well i'm sure.

I handed my thesis up at the start of nov, still don't have my marks back and haven't gotten a read on what my assessors thought of it.

I'm packing my dacks at the moment.:nervous: Really have no idea how well I went
