but i am sure i could make it through without handguns

You're ignoring the source of the problem, which is crimes committed by illegal handguns.

after the election campaigning began there hasn't been to much of interest to me. they should be dealing with some of the other big issues. healthcare and trade disputes for intance.

Martin's trying to buy urban votes, esp. Toronto votes.

You expect politicians to actually do stuff that makes sense? lol

More liberal smoke and mirrors. At least this time you guys realize it. I like Harper's idea better. Minimum sentances for those caught using guns in comission of a crime. If it doesnt make them think twice it will at least remove the threat from society for that much longer. Martin's idea will be just as useless as the $2 Billion gun registry.

Apparently if we are to believe the polls, at this point the liberals will have an even smaller minority. But the sad part is that there are still enough buttheads in this country that would actually vote for the Liberals to become government. Hopefully that will change by January.

did you hear his speech or read his proposal? I listened to it live and one of the five major points in his plan is to double the existing minimum sentences for gun crimes. He's also advocating the hiring of additional RCMP officers to work with police forces and border officials to aid in stemming the flow of weapons from the U.S. (depending upon who you believe, up to 50% of guns used in crimes here came from the U.S.)

While I'm not sure that banning handguns will do much...I also fail to see why *anyone* should be allowed to own one anyway. Consider most people's "reasons" for saying that they want to own any type of gun...protection, hunting and sport (firing range)

home protection is a bull excuse. By law, if you own a guns, do they not have to be properly stored (i.e. locked up) and remain unloaded while stored? If someone breaks in, or surprises you at night or at your front door, you're not going to have time to unstore that gun, load it, etc. This "self-defense" thing is *complete* crap. AFAIK, there are *very* few (if any) instances where a private citizen successfully used a handgun in self-defense in a legal manner. There ARE examples of private citizens accidentally shooting a friend/family member/non-criminal by mistake, children gaining access to a parent's gun, and theft of guns during robbery of a home.

and last time I checked, handguns were not used for "sport" other then at firing ranges. Why not make gun owners store their firearms AT the firing range and have incredibly tight security there? Long arms (rifles, etc) are not being banned, so hunters can relax.

still...while in principle I don't have a major problem with banning handguns...I don't think that part of his plan is going to do much. I do fully support doubling the sentence for gun related crimes and for the extra officers though.

Fair enough but the Liberals have had 12 years to do this. Why is it suddenly an issue right now? Oh i bet i can answer that. Is it because in the election so far, it's the conservatives that have been setting the pace? Seems like Martin is just trying to say anything to get elected. Based on the 12 year history of Liberals dealing with crime, id say they cant be trusted.

Didnt the little red book in 1993 say that they were going to get tough on crime? What did we end up with? A useless gun registry, karla holmolka spending time at a minimum security prison that resembled club med, and a rewriting of the young offenders act that actually WEAKENED the sentances and the ways they could be tried as adults.

Martin can piss in the wind all he wants but i still cant trust a word he says based on actions from the last 12 years.

yep (though you can't pin Holmolka on Martin)

Martin is playing to voters, Harper is spinning his wheels...

i.e. there's nothing new.

I do think he deserves credit for the other points of his plan though. You can criticize him for introducing them too late...or just because of the upcoming election...but that doesn't detract from the points themselves.

I will never understand why average citizen would need to own a gun in the first place?

All kinds of animal hunting should be banned IMO - so that shouldnt be an excuse... but thats another story.

I agree that guns should be banned from everyone except the authorities.

The very fact that he has had 12 years to do this DOES take away from the points he makes. Especially when the opposition is offering more or less the same thing.

Hes had 12 years to do it. Hes made past promises that havnt been kept. The record on crime is shoddy at best. He cant be trusted. Time to replace the government with a new one.

some hunting is actually necissary. for example, humans have made it very easy for bears to survive the winter up north. Since we leave open garbage dumps the bears are able to feed much easier and expand in numbers. It is now necissary to have a bear hunt in order to keep the bear population to normal natural levels.

Not to mention that natives claim it to be their birthright. Which i tend to disagree with. But thats a whole other jerry springer show.

Being a gun owner......and a responsible one....I agree that banning hand guns isn't going to do anything. As previously stated....the guns that are a problem are illegal ones. Just to get a licence to be able to purchase a hand gun in Canada is difficult. First you have to take the normal Possession and Acquisition Licence Course. Then there is a seperate course for hand guns. But before you can take that course you hae to be a registered member of a gun club for at least 5 years. Once you go through that and can actually get a hand gun then you can't take the gun from your residence without calling a special phone number to tell them where you are going....in some cases they will even tell you how to get there and when you have to return....once again calling them to tell them you are back home. Now it's not perfect but much better then the US. The idea of banning guns doesn't solve the problem. You have to find a way to prevent illegal guns from being on the streets.
