question about Best Buy service plans

so, i've got a 4-year service plan on my digital camera... originally i had a Nikon Coolpix 3100 - that one broke and i got a Canon PowerShot (forget which one). as far as i remember, the service plan is good no matter how many times your camera breaks in the 4 years that are covered. they either have to replace it with the exact model you have, or you pick out a new one at the same price that is printed on the receipt (which is $300 for me)... i'm pretty sure that's how it works, but i could totally be wrong.
here's the deal. i don't like the camera i have now. i want to upgrade and get one that is a lot smaller and takes higher quality photos. the camera i've got right now is technically working fine, so i'm trying to figure out a way that i can "break" it so that i can pick out a new one. i'm just scared that if i break it myself, and then they tell me there's some fine print i didn't read, then i'll be stuck with a broken camera.
any advice? has anyone done stuff like this before? |

but i'm tryin' to scam Best Buy... :p they scammed me into spending the $60 for the 4-year service plan, so now i have to scam them back with broken cameras. technically there's nothing wrong with my camera, i just want a better one... and i want to use the service plan before it expires next year. |

Do you have an external power supply?
Changes are if it's a 3rd party accessory you can inverse the polarity.
Plug that into your digi cam turn it on and watch the camera run wild. It might even start smelling burnt. Not sure if Best buy covers that kind of abuse.
But way to go Myra, stick it to the man! |

You get comprehensive coverage, with no deductibles or other hidden charges. If your product is found defective under normal usage; I wouldn't go ing with your camera, unless something is truly wrong with it. You end up screwing yourself over if you it up and they don't cover it.

| b4 u break ur camera. go in and find out exactly what they do under service plan. i can't imagine they'd let you pick out your replacement camera otherwise everyone would be doing this. |

I used to work at Future Shop for 2+ years and I still use their PSPs to scam so hard. The PSPs cover everything, even if you break it, which I have done to several of my purchases. What they will do is they will send it to get fixed at least 3 times. If you bring it back the 4th time, especially with the same "problem", they will let you pick one of "equal value". Now I'm not sure how they calculate what this again, but that's how it works and your service plan gets renewed the day you get your new one :D My advice to you is to call a Best Buy that you are NOT going to, ask them hypothetical questions, change some of your personal data and ask them what they will do for you and then go to your Best Buy and exchange.
easy peasy!!

They didn't scam you, you didn't have to buy the service plan but you did. That's your problem. And like Mario said, if you want a new camera buy it your own damn self. |
