The KLF were always known for their anarchistic plays on the system, but "America" strikes me as uninspired and indulgent compared to the intelligence of previous efforts.
I find it a perversion of "What Time Is Love" with no apparent purpose but simple absurdity. It seems to have little motivation beyond a masturbatory, self-conscious iconoclasm on the part of The KLF, which is exactly the wrong reason for them to do such a thing. It certainly doesn't have music merit, either. In that way, I consider it a failure.
Live at Trancentral was not only damn cool as a composition, but smartly parodied the very sound and attitude it was attempting. |
Well, I found it be a spot-on parody of ludicrously over-large stadium rock anthems, such as Paradise City. Also, I did read somewhere that it was a stab at a trend of the time, which was remixing British songs to be more "America friendly", called "America remixes".
Even aside from all that, how can you say it has no musical merit? There are professional hit-writers who would have killed for a chorus like that, and the mock operatic orchestral flourishes are genius. |

Okay, I confess! I'm biased against rock. |

It's about balance. Some things are worth analyzing, some aren't, some are worth both.
My point with "America" is that it wasn't really enjoyable to me in either frame. |

I think the best video is Kai Tracid - Too Many Times... one of the few videos that makes sense.... Most of Kai Tracid's video's seemingly made sense... in particular, Destiny's Path....
Other video favorites to watch were Paffendorf - Crazy Sexy Marvellous, and most Milk Inc videos, cuz their vocalist is Soooo hot :) |
