Travelling on what you can afford or can't afford, it still has zero ROI.
I believe that the more you invest in your education and your own personal value, the less you will find that "work sucks" later on in life. Personally, my work does not suck, but it probably would if I'd taken bird courses in university and/or wasted a lot of time in general. Opportunities disappear as quickly as they appear - you have to seize them when they're available to you. |
i found that travelling was the best investment i've ever made in my life
careerwise, everything's goin pretty good right now as well.. so it can be done.. juss gotta know how to do it :thepirate

... only person i know who's travelled on debt was DJ Kurfew ..

Who told you I travelled on debt? I travelled with the $ I had savings wise. Not once did I go on $ I owed. Paid for plane/train tickets beforehand, no debt.
As for the travel recommendation, DO IT asap without going super in debt at least. |

UoT has to have 2 courses that you would be interested in. It's a big school. ;)
Learning new things - wasting money?
Meeting new friends - wasting money?
Keeping your "head in the learning game" for a year - wasting money? |
U of T does have 2 courses that I'm interested in. If I were to take anymore than those 2 courses, they would not count towards my degree. I would learn new things, make new friends and keep my "head in the learning game", but I'm thinking that instead of taking 2 courses that don't even count towards my degree, my time could be better spent doing something else. |

You can learn quite a bit while travelling; it doesn't have to be a "zero ROI".

Exactly. Seize the opportunity, Graham. See the world. |

I think the best thing to do would be to stay in school before taking off on some adventure. I know too many people who left for a year and have never put there life back on track, it is possible, but as RJ said once you start to accumulate its hard to stop. Put off the trip until you finish school and start your career.
I would suggest seeing an academic advisor and I would be shocked they wouldn't make an exception if you were to take the course in the summer or first semester next year. Taking a course right now that you don't think is of any use to you may very well open up another door for you that you never considered before. Learning is never a bad thing.
However, I do know from a past conversation we had that you were not too happy with the enviroment at U of T and you need to figure out how that is playing into whatever decision you are making.
If this is strictly because of the course I say work around it, stay in school, do whatever it takes to remain a student. If its other reasons that changes things.
I know you probably have hundreds of people giving you advice - but you have my msn and # if you need one more. |

Graham
1) To everyone that agree's with me -- you know the way
2) I have a great job, I like it, it's at a major corporation, great benifits, great money, but let me tell you something, nothing and I mean NOT A THING will ever replace the experience you recieve from travelling overseas. I gaurantee it, I have some of the most memorable moments of my life happen while I was travelling. These memories ARE PRICELESS!! You cannot put a sticker price on it, IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH IT COSTS.
I'm in debt to my eyeballs becuase half way through my education I switched everything around and decided to do something else with my life(oddly enough it was after a trip to europe that made me decide this). I don't like having so much student debt, but I don't regret my trips at all. Not even the tiniest bit. Anyone that has spoken to me about travelling or may of heard some of my stories can tell you.
Don't travel on debt, but ofcouse since your an EU citizen you won't have any problems working overseas. Besides staying at hostels, and going to supermarkets (buying food and making it yourself) can make things EXTREMELY cheap. like 30-40EU /day -- TOTAL residence included.
Talk to anyone who is well travelled, they will all tell you the same thing. You will not get this oppertunity again. Trust me, the one thing I regret most of all is that I didn't take a year off between highschool and university and travelled, I mean REALLY travelled.
Working only sucks becuase of the limitations that it puts on you -- FOREVER. It's so final, once you end up with a "carreer" thats it, you can't just take off when and where you want, everything becomes so scheduled. Suddenly you find yourself not wanting to go out on a weekday because you have a meeting in the morning and so on and so on. P.S kudos to those who do, I simply cannot. Trust me Graham you have all the rest of your life to pursue work and education, the same can be said about travelling.. but somehow, there's something about being young, that you can throw caution to the wind, end up in some city that you don't know anything about, meeting people from allover. This is the age that we should be doing this sort of thing at. Don't waist it.
To those who stick it out, get a good job, be responsible and so on... great for you. Some of us, just long for an adventure no matter the cost.
p.s we still do manage to do alright in the working world as well.. You CAN have both. Just travel NOWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwww!@@ DO IT NOW!!!!

Graham, if you can travel...then by all means do it, even though I remember you telling me that you wanna hit up Europe in the summer (??). If anything, then take 1 or 2 courses now; save up money and go travelling once those courses are done.
The things you'll experience travelling around the world are gonna be much more memorable than sitting at home and being "productive".
Btw, I took a year off last year and I didn't have trouble getting back to school. In fact, I was looking forward to it. |

That isn't always the case I have a very good job with tons of room for advancement and I only graduated from high school.
I may not be completely satisfied with my job just cuz I get bored with it and like change, but I think I did pretty damn good without college/university! |
