and all the peeps that are saying to go travel on a budget. that. it really is not as fun as it sounds. you want to have money to experience everything possible. why go to France when you can't even afford to eat in a nice restaurant or buy that one of a kind hat.

My view on travelling is that it's a vacation from the ordinary and doing the extraodinary on a budget just sucks. who wants to be pinching pennies like that.

lol i've pinched pennies and also spent tons. I've gone to super markets bought all my food for the day (3 euros roughly) and had tons of fun, and i've also gone to expensive restaurants in Venice and so on.. By the way staying at hostels ARE so much fun!! and you save money too.. You can have fun both ways.

If your going backpacking you should consider making it a working holiday. If you want to really extent your stay, take in life in another country, make new friends it the best way about it, no doubt.

You can Teach English in South America and Asia, work in bars in Europe or join the staff of a hostel on Australia?

If you have some type of skill, even better! you can make some extra money and do more.

It would horribly expensive to do a whole year backpacking without even working.

Travelling on a budget can still be great fun. You will never regret it thats for sure!

yes but everybody doesnt have money lying around all the time, so people budget and go within their means, it doesnt mean you spend all your money and have nothing to support yourself with lol.

Okay, I don't see how I was passing judgment, merely stating my own experience. But if that offended somebody, I apologize. Tell me:

1) What new skills does one arrive home with after a Euro trip, and how does it factor into Graham's original query about keeping him motivated to go back to school afterwards?

2) Wouldn't loving one's work be a good thing (and if not, then why not)?

3) At what point did I say that material wealth was the sole measure of success?

4) For those like myself who do not believe in reincarnation or any other mystical afterlife that one can transfer consciousness into, how do you measure success? (I myself can list *many* other critera aside from material wealth, I'm just curious as to what yours are).
I'm not judging anyone here... simply asking questions.

1. New social skills (being more open to trying things), experiencing other cultures, meeting new people from those cultures that one wouldn't necessarily get the chance to meet living here, etc. This gives rise to new ways of looking at things, socially, culturally or otherwise. (Yes we are multicultural but experience overseas is DIFFERENT as you are in a different place.) This factors into his original question of being motivated in getting back to school afterwards is that once you're learning things in that way you'll get used to it and want to do MORE of it instead of focusing on school. Hence the answer is to combine if he can school with the travelling so as to not lose this focus. However if he cannot he should still travel as he will probably not get the chance to period later on in life. At least not in the same way. Most people I know now who are settled down, have a career, family life, a job, aren't able to travel and experience things in the same way as if Graham were to travel now.

2. Of course loving one's work is a good thing but it looks like Graham wants to experience other things as well as prepping SOLELY for the work world as they wouldn'tbe interested in going to Europe if they weren't.

3. You didn't as far as I know, maybe Beh thought you implied this? I don't know.

4. I'd measure success by achieving fulfillment (or being content). Spritual, emotional, creative and as a career I would also include as fair ways of looking at measuring success.

As for this: "Practical skills and people skills are both learned from school and professional work"

I respectfully disagree w this Digi. It can happen where practical and people skills are learned from school and professional work but it depends on the KIND of personal/people skills you are talking about. If I go out with friends from work and learn things from them socially and do "team building" exercises etc, sure it's practical and a type of people skill can be learned from this, this ISN'T what most people would like to get in terms of social skills IMO. For real emotional, cultural (huge importance), and spiritual growth I wouldn't place heavy emphasis on work/school. I'd transfer it to family, friends, travel, hobbies etc. I don't know if I misunderstood what you were trying to say but that's what I got out of it...anyway, that was my 2 cents.

that depends on what you want to do. what made you decide you wanted to change your area of study?

The fact that I enjoy Management a lot, and that I get much higher marks in Management courses than when I was taking Political Science courses.

That is the important thing. No point in getting high marks in something you don't enjoy.
