The word Jew (Hebrew: יהודי transliterated: Yehudi) is used in many ways, but generally refers to a follower of Judaism, a child of a Jewish mother, or someone of Jewish descent with a connection to Jewish culture or ethnicity; and often a combination of these attributes. This article discusses the term as describing an ethnic group; for a consideration of Jewish religion, please refer to Judaism.
Most Jews regard themselves as a people, members of a nation, descended from the ancient Israelites and converts who joined their religion at various times and places. The Hebrew name Yehudi (plural Yehudim) came into being when the Kingdom of Israel was split between the northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah. The term originally referred to the people of the southern kingdom, although the term Bnei Yisrael (Israelites) was still used for both groups. After the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom leaving the southern kingdom as the only Israelite state, the word Yehudim gradually came to refer to people of the Jewish faith as a whole, rather than those specifically from Judah. The English word Jew is ultimately derived from Yehudi (see Etymology). Its first use in the Bible to refer to the Jewish people as a whole is in the Book of Esther. In modern usage, Jews include both those Jews actively practicing Judaism, and those Jews who, while not practicing Judaism as a religion, still identify themselves as Jews by virtue of their family's Jewish heritage and their own cultural identification.

No, I don't feelstupid atall. I understand the story of two kingdoms of Israel and the kings who united them. But you're talking years of exile in a variety of other regions, countries, and continents over thousands of years. You're talking about Jewish settlers crossing the Atlantic, fighting the Gauls in France, exploring Indo-trade routes. You're still suggesting that Jews tend to marry within their own? Or are even totally monogamous for that matter? Is the bastard son of a Jewish sailor who raped some Indian princess 500 years ago while on a Dutch trade mission Jewish?
Because Judaism is currently accepted as a religion, and you essentially said, if you parents are jewish, you are Jewish, then you are stating that if your parents are practitioners of a religion you are a member of that religion.
You say that Judaism is a religion thats not for everyone, as if that same statement couldn't be applied to every other religion in the world. There may not be extensive Jewish missionaries and constant calls for conversion, but to suggest that only a handful of people convert to Judaism is insane. People marry into the Jewish faith all the time, converting for their loved ones, and many people's rigorous study of religions, lead them to the Torah and other Jewish texts, and they want in.
Who wouldn't want to be one of god's chosen people? |

i was having this discussion with redeye the other day. he is jewish and he keeps trying to find jewish girlfriends and i was like, "why? u dont even practice being a jew" but it is important to him that his kids are brougth up jewish, bla bla bla
anyway i told him he's screwing himself by ending up with a jewish chick. he'd save money by just going with an escort every day of his life AND he'd actually get a BJ.:stongue: |

AS AN ETHNICITY WHICH IS IN GENES AND THEREFORE IN BLOOD IF YOU'RE PARENTS ARE FROM THIS ETHNICITY THEN YOU ARE CLEARLY PART OF IT TOO. NO MATTER HOW SMALL IT IS. SO NO, CLEARLY YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE HISTORY NOR THE CONCEPT OF SOMETHING BEING A PART OF YOU WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT ;)
I've yet to meet enough people to have me think that Judaism is regarded as a religion and not as a ethnicity. In fact only people who I heard that from do not understand the history behind it. I took the history of the Western World last semester in college which obviously talked about the Hebrews and some people didn't understand either. After about 20 minutes of the history they all understood and grasped the concept. |

Face it. Jews are not from the garden of Eden. They are from the Middle East, just like the Muslims and some of the other various tribes. I stand by my argument that Judaism is not a race nor an ethnicity. |
