Well, personally I think we should scrap the marriage thing entirely and make it a church thing (and they can decide wheather they want to marry gays or not). Then make some kind of "civil union" law, that makes no difference considering sexual preference and all that... So all the legal stuff goes away from marriages :)

The only ing problem with gay marriage is ppl like you when you oppose it...

Please quote me when I specifically said 'I appose gay marriage'.

My issue with the gay marriage is that Parliment is spending WAY to much time on it. It's taking to much out of the political agenda for this country, while here in Pickering, small town (now city) outside of Toronto, is now roaming with poverty stricken people with no homes. Just 1-2 years ago there was not 1 single homeless person in Pickering, now I have seen the all over the place. We have had more shootings this year than ever before in Ontario. Yet we decide to focus on ing gay marriage while people are dying in our streets and we are becoming more like the U.S.....no thanks!

Should I just build a gay water fountain and call it a "water union" because originally no one planned on gay people drinking out of the fountain? You should also call interracial marriages "mutt unions" because traditional marriage originally did not intend for, and in fact was illegal for interracial relationships.

Heteros have already proven how pointless their traditional "marriage" is by divorcing so much. With stories like Spears' 48 hour marriage spree, it seems like lots of heteros are degrading such an honorable privilege down to an ass-wiping routine.

If don't think that because I want to marry a man rather than a women, it makes me any less qualified of a "marriage." I don't want separate but equal. I don't want words associated with me because I happen to be gay. The point is, I don't need a separate label for me just because I'm gay. I just want the same rights and labels that heteros have. Too much to ask for?

The U.S. didn't spend time on legalizing marriage and there's far more poverty down here. I don't think legalizing gay marriage is keeping Pickering in poverty. Besides, it's already been legalized there. Now what are your politicians doing? Still ignoring your town? I could only imagine some hick down in Alabama complaining that his crops didn't do well and his family couldn't eat in 1965, while blaming it on the Parliment for spending too much time to make it legal for black people to piss in a white bathroom.

so what; we have gay clubs, gay pride parades, gay literature, gay theory, gay rooms on campus etc etc, yet we're not allowed to have a hetero club ala marriage? total hypocrisy. and thats why i hold my view; if gays are so concerned with their own sexual preference that they can organise all these specifically gay-orientated areas in society, yet cannot respect a hetero institution... i thinks thats just a bit bollocks (no pun intended).

theres volumes of feminist literature that argues women shouldnt judge equality by what men have; but find their own identity & self-empowerment. id say the same thing for the gay community.

you can have a civil union. , even be called husband and husband. i really dont care. but if you want your gay culture then i argue marriage is part of the hetero culture. unlucky.

Well you actually never said it, but you certainly implied it many times:

"If you love someone, then you love someone, why do you have to get married"

^^ To me that means they do not need that right, ie "I oppose it".

"But I believe that gays have a million fold more rights and freedoms than the blacks did back in the day."

^^ To me that means, gays can do most things except marry, And since they have most rights they don't need another right (ie to get married)

Etc...

Sorry for my missunderstanding...

I don't think the issue is that the politicans don't have time to deal with your city, the issue is that they are incompetent to do so.

Allow me to break down what you said and respond accordingly. ;)
You argue that because gays have something that is their own, straight people need some title that is exclusively theirs? Let's see here...

"We have gay clubs."
You also have five to fifty times as many straight clubs, depending on the city. And gays and straights are allowed to go to either club.

"Gay pride parades."
Those are political tools to gain awareness of civil rights. Straight people are more than welcome. These parades will go on as long as there's still discrimination and as long as people feel the need to hide their orientation and "come out" at some point in their lives. You have straight pride parades: it's called "everywhere else."

"Gay literature."
Oh and I suppose there's no such novel depicting a relationship between a man and a women. No, no. The ten million or so books that have a man and a women in it are strictly platonic.

"Gay theory."
Jesus lord have mercy on us all. It's a theory, a set of ideas, not a word associated with a set of legal benefits.

"yet we're not allowed to have a hetero club ala marriage?"
Do you hear yourself think? You should revise your theory to say this: You have a hetero club ala marriage but you are not inviting gay people to join. You can easily waltz your way into a pride parade, gay club, read literature or practice gay theory, but how dare a gay guy claim that he can be married too because your covertly discriminating ideals keep you from sharing a name that symbolyzes a meaningful tradition to other people who want to be in a committed relationship.

Oh, so all along feminist literature has been arguing that "finding their own identity & self-empowerment" implies that women should call themselves "muffinwinners" when they go out at work beause men don't want to share the traditional name of "breadwinner". Now I know why gay people need separate words for their little shindigs.

Civil union is better than nothing, I'll agree. But why are you so huffy puffy about keeping one word to have strictly heterosexual connotations? It makes no sense that people take their time to make bans that make it wrong for gay people to do the same thing as straight people and have it be called the same thing.

I agree. Granting gays the right to marry would still discriminate others: Why should asexuals, or people to ugly to find partners, pay for other people's tax breaks/privileges?

On a note related back to the topic of the thread:

Apparently Brokeback Mountain is a hit in Boise, Idaho and Little Rock, Arkansas! In fact, it's doing well enough that Brokeback Mountain has topped the box office charts at number 1 for two days in a row now (Tues & Wednes) with only 1/3 of the theatres showing it compared to other movies.

Good stuff...yeah. :)
