There's so many phoneys sometimes it's hard to tell who deserves it and who doesn't. I once had a guy with a clean shave, short hair cut and a trench asking me for change. Crap, I can't even afford a trench coat, my hair is getting long, and I haven't shaved in 3 months! :wtf:
Though once I ended up on this really sad looking guy, all dressed in rags, no blankets, no food, really nothing. So I emptied the contents of my wallet (which I think were around 20-something). You can tell he wasn't a phoney from the look on his face. |

it's extremely rare ill get asked for money from tramps because there arent really any here :/
when you go to london you see them, but i go there like once every few years...
we only have one here and he's a local celebrity [mad ricky] he gets into the paper every now and then for something or other. he tends to shout abuse at anyone who comes near. we've had a fair few philosophical chats with him on drunken walks home though, hes smells like but has some messed up ideas.
....i also avoided him one time he was trying to sell kids clothes outside the local nightclub. ledge :D |

When I was a poor kid in college, I walked by this bum who begged for change. I went off on him, explaining that while he wasted his "bum" money on the pack of cigarettes he was smoking, he could have given the money to me so that I could do something productive with my life (continue my education). He didn't seem too happy that he asked me for change anymore.
Now when I pass bums (same ones there on the same place nearly every night), and they ask for change, I give some quick reply like, "I work hard for my money," or, "get a job." |

but are the homeless that way because they are genuinely bums or are they the result of a society gone wrong and not investing enough to ensure that people are kept off the streets? the distribution of wealth in many countries is not directly in proportion to the amount of effort a person may apply in life nor does it correspond to how much a person deserves. the rich get rich, and the poor get poorer.
dino, jokes aside. the situation in India (kids begging on the streets) is a prime example of this. same in thailand. in many cases they don't know any better. |
I agree: in India and Thailand you have true poor people living in poverty. You have that as well in the U.S. But bums on the street aren't necessarily (and I bet usually not) a product of society, but are a result of their own psychological disturbances, lack of motivation, or overall discontent and rejection of modern society (some bums think they're living free and think you are the tool). |

i bought a bum a 6 pack one time.
i dont give a what they spend their money on. whatever makes them happy. they're usually all f'd up in the head anyway with horrible mental illnesses, so it's easier said than done to be like, "hey , get a job". yea cuz i'm sure windows of opportunity are everywhere for them.
lots of them are veterans from the vietnam war..they fought for our freedom and we're gonna snub them?
dont get me wrong though, there are some pretty ed up bums in miami beach who i have told off a number of times...if they come up to me all cracked out and borderline harrass me, i tell them to off. but usually if they're just standing there sort of minding their own business hoping for a handout, i'll throw some change their way if i have it. big deal. |

Up here there are. There's all kinds of social programs that give bums no excuse not to get back on their feet. |

Cruel bastard? ...to the black lady in the wheel chair who walks on her feet when she thinks no one is looking? ...or to the white santa claus looking guy who I've seen sitting in the same spot since I moved to LA in May?
My sleep schedule is ed up. I sleep for 4 hours, up for 2, then sleep again for 4. I'm going on my second 4 in a bit. Love you. ;) |

Giving homeless people money is not the solution, nor is ignorantly writing these people off as deviants or simply lazy. It is estimated that nearly half of the homeless people in the U.S. are mentally ill in some way. I mean a number of you can continue talking out of your ass, spewing verbal diahrea or you can do two seconds of research.

I would rather give a homeless person a sandwich or a non-booze drink. That would be better in my mind that giving them raw cash which could be used for booze/drugs/sex.
When I moved to Chicago I felt bad everytime a bum would ask me for money. Now two years into the citylife I just turn the iPod up louder to not hear them. Passive, but it makes me sleep better at night. |

one time a friend up at college passed a begging bum on the street. she didn't have any money (what college kid does?) but she had a certificate/coupon for 1 free donut @ Dunkin Donuts. she gave it to him and he gave it back to her and said "i dont like donuts."
WTF.
i guess he never heard of the saying beggars can't be choosers.. |
