ive been mixing for about four months now and recorded my first set last week. on that set i included this transition. i think it sounds good but not sure if the keys are clashing... tell me what you think please. here is the link

not too bad 4 months in, but the beats werent lined up perfectly. dont worry, that will come with time. make sure you keep all old recordings so you can revisit them in a few months; youll be amazed at how much youve improved.

just watch your levels as well. sounded like the incoming track was a little louder than the outgoing.

It goes in to the dominant (a compatible key, so not a clash :)). I can key them exactly if you want.

lol damn and i thought i had the beats lined up pretty well. goes t oshow you that theres always room for improvment. and the reason i ask about the keys is because i have no way of determining the keys of songs. i dont know how to play an instrument and i also dont know what keys are compatible

I liked it :) Fair play..

THe first is in Dflat minor, the second in Aflat minor.

Think of keys as families of musical notes which a tune can belong to. Get hold of a keyboard if you can (or a google a java keyboard), a diagram showing you the note names. If you play the first of your tunes in that wee mix with your piano in front of you, you will find that a Dflat fits the tune better than any other note - this is because it is the tonic, and likewise Aflat with the second tune. Now that you know what the tonic sounds like (basically the note that fits the piece most nicely), play a tune you want to key, then just fiddle around until you find the note that fits the tune best: this will be your tonic! The tonic is the name of the key, then you just need to decide whether it is major or minor (most EDM is minor but not always).

As for compatibility, try this system:

The idea is that you mix tunes that are next to each other on the wheel. e.g. If you are in D-flat minor, mixing in to a tune in Emajor, A-flat minor, or F-sharp minor (or another D-flat, of course!) will sound good.

Hope that helps!

for a second i thought it was the circle of fifth's. then i actually read the chart.

your mix sounded great given the amount of time you have been doing this. if your whole cd sounds like this, then you're doing a lot better than i was @ 4months.

the match wasn't perfect, but it was pretty damn good. also the level of the second track had a little bit too much gain.

just concentrate on making those transitions as smooth as possible, and w/experience it will come. don't settle for good enough, because when it comes to prove yourself, good enough isn't.

keep up the good work.

You mean the easimix chart? If you read clockwise, it goes in order of the cycle of 5ths, both on the inner and outer circles.

Yeah, I'm always amazed at my old mixes from my first few months back in the day...I thought they were perfect at the time, but I listen to them now and they were definitely off. It's kind of interesting actually.

you're right. i confused myself. i had a hardcore brain fart. i saw Emajor at the top, and i was thinking... uuuuhhhhhhhhh... for me on the baritone, the bass guitar, and piano -Emajor has 4#'s, it's not all natural. at the time it didn't occur to me to go around the circle... for some reason it didn't click that Db = C# (the way i learned it) so i got more confused. i just kept scratching my head wondering what instrument this was written for, before i finally dismissed it as some chart that has something do w/harmonic mixing that i just didn't know about...

now that i rotate my head counter clockwise and see Cmajor at the top it makes sense to me now...

i feel dumb.

You play piano too? You sound pretty musical! Piano I think is the best instrument to learn for anyone wanting to understand all this basic harmony/music theory that so many people go on about here - though any instrument playing would make a huge difference...I play harp a little too.
