Folks, it is time to quit smoking. 1 out of 2 people who smoke end up dying from it's use. 50%!

CAMH offers free quit smoking aids
Major study will foot bill for 14,000 Ontarians
Jan. 12, 2006, SCOTT SIMMIE, Toronto Star

Thinking about quitting smoking?

Now might be a good – and inexpensive – time to try putting down the pack and picking up the patch. A new study aimed at helping people quit smoking will distribute nicotine replacement therapy to 14,000 Ontarians aged 18 and over.

Announced Thursday, the STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients) Study will provide eligible smokers with either nicotine gum or patches and counselling – free of charge. The study will then monitor how well participants using the methods do in their attempts to quit.

“This study will allow us to help people along in the process and monitor which quitting methods are most effective,” said Dr. Peter Selby, clinical director of addiction programs at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

“This way, we will be able to better treat people in the future.”

The study, the first of its kind in Canada, is a partnership between CAMH, Pfizer Consumer Healthcare and Ontario’s Ministry of Health Promotion. It’s not surprising the province is on board – smoking represents a burden on the provincial healthcare system estimated at $1.7 billion annually. Smoking-related illnesses also kill some 16,000 Ontarians every year.

“Research such as the STOP Study could prove important to smokers who want to quit smoking, improve their own health, and protect others from the dangers of second-hand smoke,” said Minister of Health Promotion Jim Watson in a release.

Though quitting does not guarantee that a smoking-related illness might not surface later in life, it does reduce the risk. Plus, there are other health benefits – such as improved circulation – that are felt soon after quitting.

Smokers interested in taking part in the program are required to answer some questions about their smoking and health history over the phone. That information, says a recording, will be kept confidential.

If you’re interested in taking part, put down your cigarette. Then pick up the phone and call 1-800-350-5305.

Nicotine replacement therapy is a VERY effective way to quit smoking - it -doubles- the chance of success (over will-power alone).

I encourage all who have been wanting to quit to enroll in this program since the cessation aids will be provide for -free- there is no excuse (gum and patches normally cost $30 / week).

I care about y'all so please quit - call 1-800-350-5305 and sign up now for the STOP program.

I smoke socially. I never smoke during the week. I used to smoke 1-2 packs on the weekends, but now I smoke 1-3 cigarettes on the weekends. I'm just getting sick of it now.

I'm definitely telling my dad about this. My mom hasn't smoked in 15 years, and she hates the fact that my dad still does.

He does go outside though, which is okay for the rest of us.

sounds like you have anger issues

i haven't had a smoke in 4 days either and I'm handling it fine. Just now I had my biggest test in actually drinking alcohol (which always increases my cravings).

i used to be a regular smoker but i switched to casual. never thought i could do this but just dont buy packs. If you buy packs you end up smoking more then you want to, any chance you are bored, etc. I can quit cold but i dont really see the point, like ill have a drag or two sometimes, or when im drinking. Almost never a whole smoke, plus i never really crave them.
