I never really cared for what any DJ's take on subjects like politics, drugs, or any other contemporary issue was...i only care that the music they play continues to get me goin on the dance floor.

But i do agree with him that its BS about why NYC venues were closed (RIP Twilo):(

The Guardian described Paul Van Dyk as 'a politically active DJ who preaches a strict anti-drugs message' this week, in an article angled around him winning DJ Magazines' Top 100 poll.

"Nobody needs drugs to get into music," Van Dyk told the newspaper, "I think people mostly take them out of insecurity."

Chatting to Skrufff several years ago, however, PVD was more sympathetic towards drug users, and equally critical of zero tolerance style anti-drug policies.

"People usually take drugs because they want to escape the real world but if the real world is great then they don't need to leave it," he said.

"If you want to reduce drugs problems and create a healthier environment, then you have to do it on a whole social level: to go in to schools and explain to people what they're doing to their bodies."

PVD also criticised Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg's crusade against clubs, suggesting both Mayor's policies were based on ignorance rather than sense.
"All they see are kids running around like headless chickens at six in the morning in Manhattan, so in their minds, the easiest thing to do is to close down the venue," he said.

"That's a poor decision, because if kids want to take drugs they'll take them somewhere else."

I dont agree with him on a couple points, yes some people take drugs to escape, others do not. Go into schools and explain to kids, i know he's not from here but DARE does this and has been a terrible failure.

I do agree with him on giuliani though...

yes and no.... DARE basically told us (at least, my class) how good drugs make you feel but that they ruin families and do this and do that to you... they never explain how... they never show you movies like Requiem For A Dream, or Trainspotting, that actually leave an impression... they tell you "weed makes you feel good, but its only a temporary feeling" and thats NOT how u get a point across to kids... thats how it was at my school, they never got into the grime and truth about what drugs do to you...

How can you make such a statement as fact? Got proof?

The brain parties did not start 1990. They started in September 1991 when the organizer of many of the Techno events of those early days in Berlin, "DJ WolleXDP" (also known as "DJ Tekknozid", homepage here) eventually thought that he would go away a little bit from the very hard Detroit Techno stuff to somewhat smoother tunes. He did it as a producer and invented "The Brain". The Brain used so-called "brainmaschine", special glasses with lots of small LEDs that resulted in stroboscopic flashes directly into your eyes. You can roughly imagine what happened to some of the people.... Paul van Dyk was one of the DJs of the brain parties. WolleXDP himself was absolutely against the commercialisation of his music, that is probably the reason why he is only known to insiders. Quoting excerpts from www.techno.de about WolleXDP and his project XDP (XDP for 'X-tasy Dance Project'):

yeah, but i mean, playing at Ultra Music Festival doesnt mean youre on Ultra Records... whatever this XDP thing is, PvD spun, got paid, and i dont think this means hes done drugs or advocated doing it

what would suffice, a signed affidavit from his hookup? to varying degrees, every major dj dabbles in the illicit; thundering anti-drug pronouncements when many a person have reported opposing first-hand accounts is particularly galling...
